Book Description
Levitan’s lyrical, expressive evocations of the Russian countryside are little known in the West and this book is intended as an introduction to his life and work. It describes the artist’s training in Moscow, his youthful visits to the Crimea and the Volga region and the creation of the “mood landscapes” which won him early recognition.
The employment of motifs typical of rural Russia and the innovative nature of his art are made clear. New light is shed on Levitan’s awareness of artistic trends in late nineteenth-century Paris, Berlin, Munich and Vienna and the ways in which such exposure honed his vision of the Motherland. This publication will hopefully endear western readers to the output of this outstanding artist, whose landscapes earnt him the lasting admiration of Chekhov, Stanislavsky and Diaghilev.
This revised edition expands the sections on landscape painting in Russia and on Levitan's links with the Munich Secession. Included are new illustrations, including his Marsh at Evening recently sold by Christie's London for £1.24 million.

This is the first western study of the renowned Russian nineteenth-century landscape painter, Isaak Levitan (1860-1900).Published to coincide with the recent opening of the 'Russian Landscape Painting' exhibition in Groningen, Netherlands.Born into a poor Jewish family in Lithuania, Levitan was able to enrol at the Moscow School of Painting when aged only thirteen and made rapid progress, the great merchant collector, Pavel Tretyakov buying one of his early paintings. In 1876 he sketched in the Crimea and during the summers of 1887 and 1890 he painted in the Volga region. These years saw the development of his long friendship with the future playwright Anton Chekhov and the creation of his first 'mood landscapes'.Levitan travelled extensively, if briefly, in Europe, visiting Berlin, Paris, north Italy, Switzerland, Munich and Vienna and was thus, unlike most of his Russian comtemporaries, well aware of the artistic trends in the west. His experience of European painting added considerably to the breadth of his vision in depicting the Russian terrain. In doing this Levitan sought simple but well-loved motifs of the countryside, portraying them in an increasingly laconic and intelligent way. Levitan's scenes of fields and forests at twilight achieve an extraordinary atmospheric veracity, while his joyful evocations of the Russian spring are noted for their expressive lyricism. His work was greatly admired by Diaghilev, the legendary theatre manager Stanislavsky, and the world-famous opera singer Chaliapin.Towards the end of his short life Levitan exhibited regularly with the Itinerants (the Russian association for travelling exhibitions) and with the Munich Secession and was responsible for revitalising the teaching of landscape painting in Moscow.

I love everything that Tim McCreight has written. However, I wish I had read this title more thoroughly. I am a beginner in metal and was looking for a book to give me recipes for Patinas. This did not. It may help me later on after I have developed more skills.
A great insight and concept book.......2005-09-15
First off ,I agree totaly with david barnetts views.its a insight book .Just read the title and it says what the book is all about.To me it shows what can be done and whom has done it.Grant you id love to see in the book a way to contact the artists.As a artist IMHO its sometimes very helpfull to see what can be done in order to open up my mind to new ideas.Tim does have some very helpful information in the front..I have not seen a book of Tim McCreight's that i have not liked very much as I have learned alot from..I have bought many of Tim's books as they are done very well....
I would love to see a more complex book from him on how to do anodizing of niobium and titanium,the ins and out and useage of anodizers.how to paint and do all the tricky stuff as i feel he can do..

Where did all the color go?.......2003-08-09
50 artists share insights but the techniques seem to be limited to a brief explanation and a footnote at the bottom of a picture listing the material used. While many of the photos are great examples of what "can" be done with color, you won't be finding out "how" with this book. But hey, you will get to read 50 esoteric explanations of abstract principals, the kind that artists throw in their bios to make their work seem more interesting than it really is. As a coffee table book it's fine but the useable information is extremely limited.

This is a great book for the coffee table. It has lots of beautiful color pictures with a brief history of the artist and the piece in the photo but if you are looking for ideas with detailed information on how to color metal using mediums other than paint, don't waste your time or money.

Heartwrenching.......2002-12-27
After losing my Golden, Cody, after twelve years I have been walking around in a daze. This book helped me sort out my deep feelings of grief and absolute despair. These dogs are spirits in our lives, true soulmates. They are there for us through thick and thin and go far beyond being man's best friend. I could easily associate with Marlin's deep love and deep sense of loss. I wish I could sit with her over a cup of tea and just talk Goldens. A deeply passionate book.
Best Golden Retriever Book So Far.......2001-01-05
This is a pictorial history of the author's love affair with her Golden Retrievers. The "story" is about 30 pages and the pictures about 50 or so. The story will grab you in your gut and hit you right in the heart of how you feel about your current (or former) Golden Retriever. The story about the cover photo is especially moving. For a non "how-to" book, this one is THE BEST!

My daughter bought me this book for Christmas two years ago. I haven't been able to read more than a few pages before I have to put it away. It is too moving. I know I will return to it after my 13 year old Golden has gone.

Beyond Romance.......2007-10-01
In the American South after the Civil War -- so scarred as the culture was by fire and defeat -- it was two generations beyond Reconstruction before storytellers and writers managed to attain any objective distance from the events of seventy years previous. However, romantic notions of a glorious past had already spread, telling of a glorious place now "gone with the wind." There are no traces of that glorious South because it never existed -- but the romance of it persists, waving to this day atop more than one southern statehouse.
Mr. Hunt, on the other hand, ignores none of the uncomfortable truths of the past. Not that his book is without sentimental remembrance -- it certainly has plenty, and thank goodness. But hunt does not betray those precious remembrances by illustrating them for his readers through the gauzy web of selfish rationalizations. To be sure, Mr. Hunt has written a beautiful book -- not in spite of the truth because the ugly truths are here, too. Without them, the deception of their omission would ruin the book's ability to transform the pain into the possibility of redemption.
The Last Witness From a Dirt Road.......2006-08-09
The first chapter immediately had my attention due to a scene where you realize a journey to adulthood for a young boy is about to begin. I laughed, cried, and thoroughly enjoyed reading about an era that is now past, but not totally forgotten. It was enjoyable to read about an era where life was physically harder than today's world, but less stressful. An era where people generally helped each other, cared for each other, and knew the meaning of family. I would greatly enjoy reading more works from the author.

"The Last Witness From A Dirt Road" is a wonderful read - heartfelt, warm, and thoughtful. Full of funny scenes and conversations, poignant descriptions of people and places, and touching portraits of the friends who filled his childhood, it is a true, complete, fulfilling tale of growth, with all its joys and pains. The book conveys with honesty and sensitivity the confusing emotional and intellectual chasm of growing up between the races in the southern United States in the mid-twentieth century. Sadly, the black and white worlds Mr. Hunt describes can't blend any more than allowed by the vision of a child's affectionate and colorblind eyes. Nonethteless, Mr. Hunt manages to capture a very real and tangible love between people; he is a solid storyteller and a talented dialogist who has given us a sweet, memorable tale. Months from reading it, I still carry the images with me - and some laughter, too.

Through the eyes of a child, Bill Hunt allows his readers to relive the year 1946 on a southern plantation. Mr. Hunt's description of life on the plantation is not only informational but amusing as well. Several times I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations in which he found himself. Besides being a book that supplies the reader with history of the time, the author also expresses feelings,that we can all relate to, as life around him changes. Also, being from the same parish in Louisiana as the book's setting, I found myself able to relate to many things Mr. Hunt wrote of. This book is a book you will not want to put down and also one you will not want to finish. We should all be able to express our cherished memories as well as Bill Hunt has.

What a great "coming of age" story! We all have childhood memories and experiences, but not all of us can share the tales as well as Bill Hunt does in this book. A great read, and a valuable history lesson!

Lola the Chicken.......2006-08-09
This book definitely has a surprise ending. It follows a lonely chicken named Lola who is waiting for her true love to come along so she will not be alone any more. The story has an uplifting and somewhat funny ending that I really enjoyed and children certainly will as well. Another great thing about this book is the Spanish translation right along-side the English. When reading "Lola" I was able to look at the Spanish at the same time as I read the story in English and recognize Spanish words faster. The same would be true for anyone wanting to use this book to learn English. I enjoyed the large pictures that helped move the story along and I know that children especially would enjoy this book as much for the story as for the illustrations while at the same time, learning the basics of another language.
