5 out of 5 stars A ...must have book.......2007-05-12

If your an Interior Designer or practicing to be one this book should be amongst the many in your personal library. The details are well written and displayed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Architects/Designers.......2006-11-03

I've purchased this book for 2 companies that I've worked for and for myself as well. I am an Interior Designer and find Interior Graphic Standards to be extremly resourceful and helpful when it comes to design & planning. It covers a wide range of topics such as basic electrical, mechanical, accessibility standards, plumbing fixture considerations; material finish's, door frames/types, acoustics, etc. and provides enough information on each subject so that you understand what is required to plan. My only complaint is that in many cases, measurements and dimensions are not shown where you would think they should exist. That being said, I highly recommend the book for people of all levels in this industry.

4 out of 5 stars Targeted Primarily for Persons Doing Commercial Interior Design Projects.......2006-06-17

I already own AIA's Architectural Graphics Standards for Residential Construction, which is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Wanting more information for interior design of a house, I reviewed a copy of this book at the library. The book is primarily targeted to those persons doing interior design work on commercial projects. If you're looking for interior design help for a house, I would recommend buying AIA's Architectural Graphics Standards for Residential Construction to use as a reference and look for other books targeted specifically at residential interior design.

5 out of 5 stars A good handbook for interior details!.......2004-03-09

The day I received the Interior Graphic Standards, I used some of the details in the book for a project I was working on. This book provides information, including construction details, which are very useful to the practicing architect and interior designer.

5 out of 5 stars Bible of Interior Design~!.......2003-12-04

I'm an Interior Design student at Ryerson University in Toronto, and I have never seen a book that is as comprehensive as the IGS. It covers almost everything. I've used this book as a reference for almost every school project I've done. My professor strongly recommended this book to us, but at first I was hesitated to buy it because of the price. However I found it cheaper to buy online than in retail bookstores. I told my classmates about it and showed them the book, after they've seen it they said they are all gonna buy it. Overall this book is worth its price and I strongly recommend it~!

This book is a necessary staple for every Interior Designer's book collection

4 out of 5 stars A great reference book for Design Students and Practicing Designers!.......2006-12-16

I recently purchased this book while taking a Commercial Interior Design course as part of my Interior Design degree. I found the book to be very helpful in many aspects of commercial design and specification. Also, my boss, who is a licensed Interior Designer and has been practicing for about 10 years has a copy of the book that she used while in college; she refers to it as her design reference Bible, haha. Although some of the material (such as codes) may be out of date due to the everchanging laws and standards, overall this book is filled with valuable information. A must-have for all interior designers!

5 out of 5 stars Designers.......2006-02-20

A great book for interior designers. Serves as a great refrence. A must add to any library collection!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2003-12-31

A very informative and usefull book for all designers.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY! it's hard to imagine a more worthless book.......2001-01-18

This book is a fiasco. As a professional in commercial space planning for many years, I picked it up based on a 'glowing review'. I find another few good ratings here on-line. The authors mother must be writing them, because no one who actually attempted to verify the faulty and incomplete information within, could ever see this tome as worth the paper upon which it is printed.

One reviewer was accurate though; it isn't a bad door stop.

    Book Description

This book offers a wealth of valuable, hard-to-find technical information on mid-twentieth-century building materials and systems, all carefully selected from the Fourth (1951) through Seventh (1981) editions of Ramsey/Sleeper's acclaimed Architectural Graphic Standards. A key reference for architects, builders, and educators whose work involves building maintenance and restoration, it brings back into print hundreds of pages that no longer appear in the current edition of Architectural Graphic Standards but which have real value and relevance for today's architectural practice.
Chapters include data and details for residential design, sitework and landscaping, stairs, fireplaces, energy-related issues such as sun shading and solar control, and more. Of particular interest is the information-on topics such as stonework and terra cotta, plank and beam framing, roofing systems, mill construction, and pneumatic tube conveyors-concerning systems and techniques no longer used in contemporary design but still found in buildings subject to remodeling and adaptive reuse.
Throughout, the book is made easy to use with the help of useful guidance on the interpretation of the older pages and annotations placing the material in a CSI MasterFormat(TM) context.
Filled with well-presented visual examples that offer important practical insights into the evolution of twentieth-century design and practice, this unique volume is an important working tool and a valuable addition to every architectural library.

          Book Description

For the first time, beginning interior designers can learn how to graphically communicate their ideas with a resource that is designed specifically for them! While traditional drafting books focus on architectural and engineering readers, Architectural Drafting for Interior Designers eliminates the "widgets" and irrelevant coverage that is often seen, and incorporates material and examples that are relevant and meaningful to today's interior designers. This book also addresses the specific needs of beginning interior designers by focusing on topics needed before AutoCAD is even introduced, such as how to draw a floor plan, how to use it to create an interior elevation, and how to understand the relationship between 2D and 3D drawings. The only book that is written to the standards of the NCIDQ and interior design trade associations like NKBA, this will provide readers with a strong, standards-based foundation in interior design.

                Book Description

In this innovative guide, master art instructor William Maughan demonstrates how to create a realistic human likeness by using the classic and highly accurate modeling technique of chiaroscuro (Italian for "light and dark") developed by Leonardo da Vinci during the High Renaissance. Maughan first introduces readers to the basics of this centuries-old technique, showing how to analyze form, light, and shadow; use dark pencil, white pencil, and toned paper to create a full range of values; use the elements of design to enhance a likeness; and capture a sitter's gestures and proportions. He then demonstrates, step by step, how to draw each facial feature, develop visual awareness, and render the head in color with soft pastels.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book........2007-09-17

                Its really a good book.
What i liked about it . is how its simple yet advanced.
Really diversed , which can serve well the beginners and the skilled artists.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent drawing book.......2007-07-16

A teacher of 30 years experience, William Maughan encourages the reader to move beyond linear drawing of the head to a value (chiarscuro) oriented approach. The book is well written and illustrated with the authors beautful drawings. I've been drawing regularly for over 10 years now as a discipline for my painting and I have adopted this book as my text for advancement. Well worth purchasing.

                4 out of 5 stars Maughan's book is great........2007-05-07

There is a reason why this book is requested in the finest Ateliers in the world: it's the real knowledge of what you are seeking as an artist.

2 out of 5 stars drawing the head.......2007-04-11

I did not find this book very helpful to me. I did not like the pictures .They did not provide good examples to follow.

                3 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Guide.......2006-12-12

This book is not for beginners or even those who are not beginners, but who have no experience with pastel. There are so-called "step by step" instructions but it is difficult to understand how the instructor gets from the first drawing to the final one.

There is little variation between the poses or the expressions on the models faces. If you want to draw something besides a three quarter pose with an unsmiling face you won't find it here. On the other hand if you are interested in drawing monsters, there is a whole chapter on that.

A lot of space is given to discussing chiaroscuro with much repetition.

If you are looking for a "complete" guide to drawing the head, this is not the book.

The sister book to The Body, which was also written and edited by William Ewing, Love and Desire collects a diverse range of images that attest to Ewing's belief that "all photographs are, at some level, about love, and all photographs are triggered, to varying degrees, by desire." In pursuing this theme, Ewing classifies the photographs into eight different categories--Bonds, Icons, Observation, Propositions, Tokens, Libidos, Reveries, and Obsessions. Each of these chapters begins with an essay in which Ewing draws on his deep knowledge of the history of photography to explain the relevance of the selected images. The photos themselves run a full gamut of historical imagery, from the beginning days of the medium up through contemporary art and recent commercial photography. Julia Margaret Cameron explores a family bond in her depiction of the Madonna and child, dated 1865. In 1955, Frank Horvat, in all likelihood standing on a Paris bridge, observes a couple kissing on the quay below. Helmut Newton explores obsession in the mid-1980s with his portrait of a stockinged ankle and foot in a black stiletto heel. Brassaï's 1932 portrait of Janet--in which Janet is depicted from the waist up, lying back on a bed, her eyes closed, with a look of ecstasy on her face--opens the Libidos chapter. There are hundreds of other compelling images here, and together they go far to define the complex nature of human love and desire. --Mary Wren

                Book Description

The most extraordinary visual survey of human passion ever created, Love and Desire is the long-awaited sequel to William Ewing’s influential and highly successful The Body (over 150,000 sold in the U.S. alone). Here, the internationally acclaimed photography curator brings together over 300 color and duotone images that explore human intimacy in all its forms—from the innocent sensuality of a mother and child, to the group adoration of a cultural icon, to the carnal connection between the sexes. These images—both the famous and the obscure from the past 150 years of photography—come together in a thought-provoking exploration of humankind’s deepest yearnings. Sliding easily into its translucent slipcase, this beautifully designed book offers an amazing array of compelling images at an irresistible price.

                3 out of 5 stars A huge topic.......2006-01-15

Maybe too big for any one book, this included. Ewing has selected a few hundred photos from nearly 150 years of photographic art to represent his topic. Romantic love, in family, marriage, and courting are all well represented here. Ewing also presents many samples of carnal love, including Nan Goldin's reminder that self-love can be carnal as well. He presents Victorian images of children's innocence, which work well with (or aginast) Sally Mann's pictures on similar topics. With or without eros, many of these pictures present pure, voluptuous sensuality - "Runner Beans" (p.315) may be the richest (and most humorous) example in this category.

Ewing also uses contrast to show love. Myers's 1898 photo, (p.60) demonstrates parental affection with a chill edge. That could have been a close moment between father and child. That sharp, narrow divide separating their faces represents a much wider distance between the two, echoed in the tentative, almost unwilling touch of the adult's hand.

In the end, though, I found this a weaker assemblage than Ewing's "The Body." As broad as it is, the topic of the human figure is much narrower than this book's theme, so it's an easier topic to represent. Perhaps because love and desire mean so many different things, this collection came across as unfocussed and spotty. This collection is good, but fell short of its ambitions.

4 out of 5 stars Love and Desire: Photoworks (Wr. by William A. Ewing).......2002-06-12

This four hundred page volume is a followup to the photography book entitled "The Body," which had pictures of just that.

Here, Ewing collects mostly black and white photography from the last one hundred and fifty years into the volume. He seperates them according to different "genres": Bonds, Icons, Observations, Propositions, Tokens, Libidos, Reveries, and Obsession.

With these genres, all collected under the broad "love and desire," a case could be made as to why the editor put some pictures in "Tokens," but not "Libidos." The book tries to be an overview of love in photography, but barely scratches the surface.

The good news is the collection he does have is marvelous. I read the book in one sitting, the genre intros are short, but the photos here are wonderful. Ewing provides excellent credits, letting the reader try to find more work by photographers they have never heard of.

The opening introduction essay, capsulizing the history of photography is both too long and dismissive. Ewing laments the use of the camera by the common person to take family photos, not realizing that every snapshot cannot be art.

With all the photography here, the volume is one that can be picked up and perused again and again. Despite some spotty editorial choices, I highly recommend it.

The book does contain explicit images of sex and nudity.

4 out of 5 stars not quite as good as the body.......2001-12-23

this collection of photos isn't quite as good as his selection for the body. but there are many good photographs in it. the text of the chapters is well written and informative. some of the placement of the photos is confusing. all in all, a good book to have.

4 out of 5 stars Give it to someone you love.......2000-01-28

This is a book to savor, to page through slowly, to share with someone you love. As long as that someone is relatively enlightened about the occasional explicit or disturbing image!

The photographs are well chosen and span a very wide range, from interesting early pornography (yes, there was hard-core even in 1855!), to romantic and abstract pictures that wouldn't shock even the dullest U.S. Senator, to Ann Mandelbaum's bizarrely erotic whatsits. Many of them are true gems, images that catch and hold the viewer in that wordless somewhere evoked by the best photographic art.

The arrangement into eight large sections gives a certain amount of structure to the book, and allows the text to cover a subset of the images at a time, but don't look for any very scholarly or systematic division. The format is too small for a coffee-table book, and the text is too general and chatty to constitute a serious critical study; but these are nits. The book is well worth buying, or giving, to anyone that takes in joy through the eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A really thoughtful and beautiful collection.......1999-11-20

This is an elegant slipcased book with hundreds of art photographs which really make you think about the nature of love and desire. It's hard to put down, and the images haunt you....I loved it!

I was at the University of Maryland when Frank Cho's comic strip was running in The Diamondback. It was the only thing worth reading in the paper. This is a very, very funny comic strip. The characters, who are animals are hilarious. Dean, the pig, is a great send up on Frats and male chauvinism. You also get a lima bean, a gerbil, and the main character, Frank, is a duck. The best character, of course, is the very human Brandy.

If you've ever seen Liberty Meadows and enjoyed it in your newspaper, The Angry Years is even better.

4 out of 5 stars Funny animals aren't just for kids anymore!.......2001-12-15

I've been a fan of Liberty Meadows, the comic book that collects Frank Cho's syndicated comic strip of the same name, for years now, so when University Squared became available again, I pounced on it. It's kind of a weird companion piece to Liberty Meadows; not quite a prequel (these stories were from Cho's College newspaper), and although the characters have the same names in both books, there are weird differences: one character is a duck in this book, and a man in Liberty Meadows; another a lima Bean (!) here, a frog in Liberty Meadows. (It's really weird...)

There isn't a story, per se. The book follows the characters (Animals, attending school with Humans....)as they drink and carouse their way through campus life. The cartoons are much raunchier than the later Liberty Meadows strips; without the anal retentive syndicate to hamstring him, Cho can go all out with the gags. (Even the raunchiest of the strips never gets beyond a PG-13 level, though. So it is safe for older kids.) Cho manages to deliver some really good belly-laughs, and slips in a touching ending as well. Comic strip fans who find the daily funnies too whitebread are well advised to enroll in this University.

                  GOOD JOB, MONKEY BOY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Frank Cho is brilliant.......2001-12-11

With "Liberty Meadows" making a permament transition from comic strip to comic book at the end of 2001, folks who want to aquaint themselves with the new version could do worse than to pick up this collection of the strip that spawned it. "University Squared," Cho's first strip, is "Liberty Meadows" in a raw, unrefined and uncensored state -- a state the comic book may take a few steps towards once freed from the rigours of newspaper censors.

Even in its young form, though, Cho's strip shows again and again why he is held in such high regard. His characters are funny, his situations are original and he doesn't blanch from tackling weighty topics or rauncy issues whenever he wants. Get this, get "Liberty Meadows: The Big Book of Love" and then start getting the comic book.

5 out of 5 stars THE GHANDI OF CARTOON IS HERE!.......2000-09-08

If you were a college student, a frat brother, a trouble maker, a drinker or just had odd looking animals walking around talking to you....then this book is probably about you! Experiance college with an alcoholic pig, a short tempered circus bear, and a lima bean ( don't ask). And let's not forget the duck and Brandi, for without them....well, the book would still rock! This book is a must to all those who love comics. Every strip should be put on billboards. Uncle Frank is the man.....( from one of the Monkey Boys )
