Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of cool Pictures inside.......2007-01-20

This book doesn't really talk much about anything on Source or the people creating the game. It focuses mainly on the process of how different elements in the game came out. With lots of concept and rendered art, it's good to have it around for inspiration or just plain viewing. The book also gives some information on Half-Life 1 and Mods, though these sections still give lots of cool pictures and very little text in comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Half-life - More please.......2006-03-02

This book reveals what goes on behind-the-scenes at Valve and how the PC / Console game - Half-Life and Half-Life 2 has developed over time.
I am huge Half-Life fan and this book shows how much work and thought goes into producing a genre-defining / award-winning game. One of the highlights for me in the book was how they created the faces of the characters in the game. A wonderful book with a lot of interesting facts. It is also a large book which shows off the artwork to great effect. I am really pleased I bought it and would recommend it to any fan of the game.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but with limited appeal........2005-12-05

As the review below states this book isn't a behind-the-scenes book or a chronicle of the development of the game nor is it a book discussing the technological merits of Half Life 2 or the Source Engine. Although, it does contain elements of all of the afformentioned parts, it is in the end an art book, but a great one at that with great color, a sturdy build, and a clean uncluttered design.

As a fan of the game myself, I enjoyed seeing all the places and ideas that never made it into the game and the evolution and design of those that did. One area, I feel the book ought to and should have delved into more, was the development and evolution of the plot itself which except in reference to other points was never brought up significantly.

Fans of the Half Life franchise and people interested in the creative development of games will find this book of interest. Others may want to pass on it.

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures, not much else.......2005-07-22

I guess I was looking for more of the details behind the making of Half-life 2, not just tons of concept art. The artwork is very nicely presented in rich glossy color, but the behind the scenes content isn't there. If you want a better book for looking behind the scenes of a computer game, get the Doom 3 Making Of book instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Specially if you liked the game........2005-04-06

When i got the book i wasnt expecting such a huge book. Anyway the book was great and it has alot of pictures and concept arts and cut monsters and scenes ! All in high quality gloss paper. This although doesnt give a very detailed descriptions about the engine and contains almost no pictures of the valve team who i wanted to see very much. I recommend this if you played HL2 and loved it and wants more insight of the game (not the engine but art)

                Book Description

Conceived as a "museum for living," Schwartz/Silver's Davoli-McDonagh residence in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is filled with individual expression and varied viewpoint. As a work of art that also accommodates other works of art, the house is a veritable prism of creativity. The spirit behind this 14,500 square-foot residence is the husband-and-wife client team of Robert Davoli and Eileen McDonagh--he a blues singer and venture capitalist, she a professor and feminist activist. The couple gave the award-winning firm Schwartz/Silver Architects of Boston free rein to develop a compelling architectural idea. Their sole requirement was that the overall scheme preserve the natural attributes of the five-acre site, with its rolling topography, heavy trees and ground cover, and a steep 80-foot drop-off that leads down to a mile-long lake. This book includes contributions from designers Mikyoung Kim, Tsao & McKown, Office DA and artists such as Milan Klic, Taylor Davis and Ilan Averbuch. The design and building process is chronicled by photographers Shellburne Thurber and Alan Karchmer.

                      Book Description

"Getting Up" is the term used by graffiti "artists" to describe their success in making their mark on the New York subway system. Through candid interviews, New Yorker Craig Castleman documents the inside story of the lives and activities of these young graffitists.

                      5 out of 5 stars Let's all do whole trains (1 each).......2006-07-01

A beautiful book and a great read from start to finish!

I particularly enjoyed the parts about early graffiti gangs in New York and the slang they used - DGA: Don't Get Around (someone who is unknown and/or knows nobody).

Another great part was the description of the whole train by Lee and the Fabulous 5. Great work fellas.

Get up! Somebody say... Get up!

Additional to this, I recommend Subway Art by Martha Cooper & Henry Chalfant.

4 out of 5 stars Getting up to Get Down.......2005-09-06

From the second you open this book, to the day you put it down for the last time, you are exposed to the origins of graffiti and the graffiti lifestyle. From the in depth interviews with the infamous "Fabulous Five", to the bias opinions of New York's M.T.A(Metropolitan Transit Authority), this book brings you back to the late 70's, where style's were made and the fame was gained.
As a graffiti artist myself, I related to a lot of the stories told by the artists documented in this book. Craig Castleman portrayed the perfect image of what it's like to be an "artist" and a "criminal" at the same time. The adrenaline of a late night excursion, to the overload of a police chase. At the end of it all, the overall satisfaction of seeing your name roll by on the local transit line.
I really enjoyed looking back at the photos captured in the book. There is a lot of history documented in this piece. The first "whole train", the evolution of the "bomb", to miscelaneous "tagging" are all shown in detail colour pictures.
I feel this book captured the essence of the graffiti culture, and documented the views and opinions of both sides, the artist, and the audience.
"Getting Up" Craig Castleman, definetly a good read, for any audience. Educational and fun at the same time.

Real stories about "REAL" grafitti artists. It could not have been done better! The author, Graig Castleman writes about one of the most respected artists of them all, Lee. Lee's Graffiti years were awsome. The book is great to help the public truly understand the term "Street Art" Any book that can make my own parents believe in my own Graffiti gets 5 stars!

This book collects a three-issue series that Jaime Hernandez created shortly after the initial gazillion-year run of LOVE AND ROCKETS. Those familiar with Jaime's work will be comfortable with his simplified drawing and eminently likable characters.

WHOA, NELLIE! is a wholesale tribute to women's wrestling -- the book contains several pages of "pin-ups" -- that contains all the narrative ups and downs of an actual bout. Rules are broken, the goods guys are winning, the good guys are losing, and then, well, anyway, it's all about loyalty. Xochitl "The Terrible" and Gina are an aspiring tag-team that appeared initially in LOVE AND ROCKETS. Working out of Vicki Glory's stable, they have to fight each other, several formidable opponents (including the terrifying Birmingham Lady Bashers), and, of course, the weird distortions of reality forced on the players in the wrestling universe. Who can be sure of their standing in the pecking order if you can't remember whether you're "good" or "bad" depending on which part of Texas you're in?

The dreams and friendships of Xochitl and Gina are innocent and naive, and their about to get stomped by some old fashioned real-world politics. WHOA, NELLIE! is a classic sports story, told in an entirely unique fashion. A thoroughly gratifying read.

Whoa, Nellie! is a spectacular book for all ages, which is something of a surprise as the Los Bros Hernandez usually handle more adult material. The story is unique, the characters are wonderful (no one writes realistic and sympathetic women like the Hernandez Bros.), and it is just so much fun read! Most importantly, it has one of the most artfully done "messages" I've ever seen anywhere. Adults can enjoy it, but I would buy it for kids, too.

5 out of 5 stars Xaime triumphs again.......2000-09-19

A comic book about women's wrestling? Yep, and it's a keeper, even if (like me) you don't care at all about wrestling. This isn't about wrestling anyway -- it's about what friendship and compassion mean when weighed against success and ambition.

Another reviewer on here rightly praised Jaime Hernandez's stunning wrestling tableaux, which go on for a wordless two or three pages. It's really Hernandez's way of getting to draw modern gladiator-goddesses in battle. What was in the background of several "Love & Rockets" stories is now the foreground, and we get to meet two up-and-coming (or perhaps up-and-falling) wrestlers, Xochitl (Xo for short) and Gina, as they discover the realities behind their dream-come-true of wrestling as a tag team. Fans of "L&R" will be happy to see veteran "Tia" Vicki playing a key role, and even Maggie pops in for a visit, as endearing as ever. The ending brought a damn tear to my eye -- not bad for "a comic book about women's wrestling," eh? Appropriate for all ages and for all comics readers except the hopelessly closed-minded ("I don't like it cuz it ain't superheroes," "I don't like it cuz it ain't Maggie and Hopey," etc.), "Whoa Nellie" deserves its place alongside the other Los Bros Hernandez volumes on your shelf. You DO have a Hernandez shelf, right?

5 out of 5 stars Sure Quality, High Entertainment.......2000-08-07

This comic is an absolute treasure. After purchasing the book at a comic shop, I spent my first few minutes paging through the various images, reading every third page or so, on the subway ride home. At a random glance, the artwork is of such high quality, every emotion is immediately obvious. A complete read of the book gave a lot more insight into the genius of this work.

The book is about a women's wrestling tag team, and sticks to the idea of ugly, mean wrestlers rather than implant-happy models. The main characters are lifelong friends who try to make it into the higher ranks of the league. What they don't expect is that the other ladies mean business. The pages with dialog lay out the story in humble detail, the way that the Hernandez brothers do best. When the matches begin, however, you see their true skill. Without a word, you can 'read' the progression of the matches. From beginning to end, you literally see the topsy-turvy battle, shifting from one team's favor to the next, until the end of the match. No words, just pictures. It's great, I'd recommend it to anyone patient enough to read into the images. Definitely unique and an absolute delight to read.

The story takes place at a horseback riding camp. It includes a square dance, hay ride, and horseback riding. The antics of the girls during their pillow fights are realistic. The excursion into the night with the runaway wheelchair was quite a surprise! Enjoyable. Rarely do you read stories which include characters who are the heroine who have a physical disability. The mysterious missing horse is a mystery worth reading. The ending was a special surprise. Young equestrian will love this story.
