Excellent Resource.......2007-05-15
A must have for any green designer, builder or home owner who wants to do the right thing.
not what I expected.......2006-03-27
this is actually a list of places that sell "green" materials- like a specialized phone book. I think most of this information is on line, and that we will need to buy things within our local area- not from the other side of the county. we returned this book.
Excellent Job of Research.......2005-09-08
Housing is probably the second largest consumer of non-renewable resources after the automobile. This book is on building in a way that provides everything you need in a house, but doing so with a minimal impact on the earth.
The first step is building a house that is satisfactory but not so big as has become normal in the US, and designing it for energy efficiency. Well insulated houses are easier to keep warm in the winter, cool in the summer.
After the design is completed, then comes the selection of components and materials to be used in the construction of the house. That's where this book comes in. In going through the book you can find ideas that will help you in the design, but more importantly, you will find components that fall into the general rules of 'reuse/recycle.' Here is lumber recovered from older buildings, lumber made from plastic that from recycled packaging. Here are high performance appliances, insulation made from recycled components.
This book takes the form of a listing of suppliers, broken down by category. I find that by looking at these procucts, many of which I didn't even know existed, the design of the house is changed to fit.
These people have done an excellent job of research as to what's avaialble.

A Superb Overview of Ancient Greek Coinage.......2004-12-06
I agree with other reviewers that this book is an excellent introduction to ancient Greek coins collecting.
What I also liked about this book is:
1)The list of major issuing cities with brief but interesting comments regarding the cities' history (e.g. the dramatic events such as the destruction of Messana by Carthaginians)
2) The list of the rulers of major Hellenistic dynasties (reading about these people's lives and seeing their faces on coins is really impressive)
3) Masterpieces of Greek Art section featuring 25 beautiful coins which are among the author's favourites (I personally liked about 20 of those).
One of the things you learn from this book is that you don't actually have to OWN these beautiful coins to ENJOY them. All it takes is willingness to spend your time and energy to explore these treasures from the past.
A beautiful introduction to ancient Greek Coin collecting.......2003-08-13
Having collected ancient coins for decades, I must confess to a real fondness for the Sayles books, and for this one in particular. It is beautifuly illustrated, as well as informative, and makes the reader truly want to own the coins which Sayles discusses. One thing which makes this better for new collectors than some other books, is that Sayles isn't touting ancient coins as an investment. They are NOT a sound investment for the average collector, who can expect a 30% or higher LOSS when reselling the coins which most average collectors can afford to buy -- beautiful as they are, the typical coins which the average collector can afford are NOT going to shoot through the roof in value, even if they are extremely rare or unique. The market strength and bullish demand isn't present to allow the average collector to profit from most of his or her coins. What makes the Sayles book appealing is its inspiration for readers to COLLECT these coins and treasure them, as they have been treasured for thousands of years, and YES, it is thrilling indeed to buy a coin of which only two or three other specimens are known in the world, and -- YES! -- it is possible to own coins which are absolutely unique. Thanks to generations of dedicated collectors, it is even possible to buy -- for small sums -- coins which have established provenances dating back a century or more. My own collection includes coins once owned by President John Quincy Adams and by J. P. Morgan, but they each cost less than some best-selling potboiler novels which will be forgotten by next season. Read Sayles and begin to dream!!!
As a beginner resource, great!.......2002-09-05
Sayles' prose has a way of bringing alive some great coins. It is a great way for a beginner to become both more interested in the hobby as well as developing the principle of purchasing books in field of study rather than buying every forgery and fake on the market. The biggest drawback is that you really need Volume I as an introduction to the series and collecting, then pick up the other volumes as your interests expand. It took me about two years to get all six volumes. They're worth it at a reasonable price, but no substitute for other standard reference works. You can also loan them out to friends to get them interested.
A Terrific Book!.......2001-01-21
In roughly 200 pages that are divided into 6 chapters and 4 appendixes with copious illustrations and brief bibliographies throughout - this book is beautifully jammed with coins and information. Following the example of the first volume, this book is in plain language and is easy on the eyes in it's print, format, tables and charts.
The bulk of this book deals with differing coin types from differing geographical areas and and the artistry of the larger series. This really does a new collector a big favor because the new collector gets to purview a plethora of coin types from throughout that series and it may go a long wat to help them decide what they would like to collect. What is really important about this book is the focus on the coiner or "celator" and what he did and the role he played as artist and the chapter on "Masterpieces of Greek Art" is a beautiful read by itself with large B&W illustrations of some of the most aesthetically pleasing coins in the series.
The great strength of this book is that it is equally beautiful and useful and the author obviously loves what he is writing about rather than giving a very dry, scholarly and perfunctory survey. I highly recommend this book.
A must read for the coin enthusiast.......1998-04-04
If you are as fascinated with ancients as I am, you MUST have this book. You will love how easy it is to read and you will constantly refer back to it.

Book Description
In this remarkable contribution to photographic criticism and psychoanalytic literature, Ulrich Baer traces the hitherto overlooked connection between the experience of trauma and the photographic image. Instead of treating trauma as a photographic "theme," Baer examines the striking parallel between those moments arrested mechanically by photography and those arrested experientially by the traumatized psyche—moments that bypass normal cognition and memory. Taking as points of departure Charcot’s images of hysteria and Freud’s suggestion that the unconscious is structured like a camera, Baer shows how the invention of photography and the emergence of the modern category of "trauma" intersect. Drawing on recent work in the field of trauma studies, he shows how experiences that are inherently split between their occurrence and their remembrance might register in and as photographic images.
In light of contemporary discussions of recovered memories and the limits of representing such catastrophes as the Holocaust, Baer examines photographs of artistic, medical, and historical subjects from the perspective of witnessing rather than merely viewing. He shows how historicist approaches to photography paradoxically overlook precisely those cataclysmic experiences that define our age. The photograph’s apparent immunity to time is seen as a call for a future response--a response that is prompted by the ghostly afterlife of every photograph’s subject. In a moving discussion of a rare collection of color slides taken by a Nazi official in the Lodz ghetto, Baer makes us aware that it is the viewer’s responsibility to account for the spectral evidence embedded in every image.
Book Description
The year is 1893. Under the iron grip of Napoleon IV, France has extended its tyrannical rule throughout the world, forging a vast Empire that rivals that of ancient Rome. Only one man stands in defiance against the Empire, roaming at will beneath the surface of the oceans: Young Captain Nemo and his ragtag crew aboard the Nautilus II.
Customer Reviews:
An Engaging and Wonderful Story.......2005-10-08
Captain Nemo is one of those rare titles that captivated me from the first few pages. After reading many stories and many books, it has become less common to find a title which draws me in so quickly and so easily from the first few pages, but this has proven to be such a title and from that early rare moment it never let me down, becoming also one of the few that demands to be read without being putting down for even a moment.
Every aspect of Captain Nemo, the way in which it touches the realms of fantasy, science fiction, and even the alternate reality within which this story takes place, are done in a manner that blends them into a perfect harmony. The alternate reality, within which this story takes place, is developed very logically and explained early in the story, allowing one reading Captain Nemo to dismiss questioning thoughts about how such a world came into being and why does such a world exist at the time it does within the story. This allows the reader to fall into the simple enjoyment of the story itself, which is yet another reason I believe Captain Nemo to be one of these rare stories well worth your reading time.
Story wise Captain Nemo is excellently developed and when presented with stunning and often breathtaking artwork it has, brings to mind in great sci-fi stories, both movies and novels, of the all time, as well as everything that was wonderful about those movies, and novels, everything which helped to make them timeless.
Captain Nemo starts in the year 1893, within a world that is very different than the 1893 of our world. Due to a change in the outcome of historical events, the French winning a battle that in our world they had lost this world of 1893 falls under the oppression of Emperor Napoleon IV. Having won that one battle, France was able to extend its tyrannical rule throughout the world, forging a vast Empire, one which in size and power rivals that of ancient Rome. However, it is not a world in which all accept France as being their rightful supreme rulers, and being one such man is young Captain Nemo. Nemo along with other members of his crew are now considered rebels and outcasts by the French Empire for standing in defiance of Napoleon IV's Empire as they roam at will beneath the surface of the oceans aboard the Nautilus II.
Add to this story a cast of characters which truly leap off the page, from Captain Nemo himself, his loyal crew, the man obsessed with finding Nemo, the accidental, but very beautiful visitor to the Nautilus II and you have a better understand of what has made this story so magical for me and what has left me wanting more with each page I have read of Captain Nemo.

Book Description
This imaginative graphic novel presents a fictionalized history of Jules Verne's experiences writing the legendary 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Through encounters with such characters as an orphaned boy with a mysterious package, an Indian princess on an obsessive search, and an eccentric artist of fantastical creations, Verne discovers and immortalizes the most compelling character of his writing career: Captain Nemo. Weaving together details of Verne's own life with events aboard the infamous Nautilus, François Rivière and Serge Micheli tell a powerful-and cryptic-tale of art, science, and passion.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully done!.......2007-03-08
A truly great graphic novel. Amazing visuals, beautiful use of color, fantastic action, and a classic story.
Pretty Art, Mess of a Story.......2005-12-02
First of all, this is a stunningly produced book. Absolutely beautiful, rich, popping color inside and out, printed on lovely paper, great endpapers, all as one might expect from art publishers Abrams. However... the actual story is a haphazard postmodern deconstructivst mess -- so much so that the best advice one can give readers is not to bother reading, but to simply absorb Serge Micheli's art for its own sake.
The book was born from co-creators Riviere and MIcheli's childhood love for the works of pioneering science-fiction author Jules Verne -- especially 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In his afterword, Riviere talks about the influence of another pioneering work of science-fiction, Ian Watson's 1973 debut The Embedding, which explored linguistics and posited language as a means to bridge the gap between human consciousness and the otherness of the objective world. Somehow these two fascinations, along with a memoir by Verne's niece, resulted in this unfortunate blend of the fictional characters and world of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with the real world of Jules Verne as he was writing the story, along with a few other fictional characters. This isn't the worst premise in the world, a certainly successful examples of such a concept exist, however in this case the creators agreed that "above all, some kind of demiurgic madness was what [we] felt should be given paramount importance in the narrative we imagined".
Well, some people's madness is other people's mess. You get Verne as the tormented artist figure, a mysterious orphan, an Indian princess, a little demon, and a few other assorted weirdoes. There's occultism, weird green luminescent fluid, and drugs to spice things up further. You know you're in for a rocky ride when the back cover even admits that it is a "cryptic" tale. And if you haven't read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it'll all be that much more confusing. This is the kind of free-form non-storytelling that probably would have gone over really well in the late '60s or early '70s (especially with some pot or mushrooms), but has little to offer the average graphic novel reader. It's doubtful it would have ever been translated and published outside of France, expect that Abrams is owned by a French media conglomerate...

Appropriate "reader friendly" type sizes have been chosen for each title--offering clear, accurate, and readable text. All editions are complete and unabridged, and feature Introductions and Afterwords. This edition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea includes a Foreword and Afterword by T. A. Barron.Jules Verne is considered the "Father of Science Fiction" because of the power of this--his most famous novel."The year 1866 was signalised by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and puzzling phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten. Not to mention rumours which agitated the maritime population and excited the public mind, even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited. Merchants, common sailors, captains of vessels, skippers, both of Europe and America, naval officers of all countries, and the Goverments of several States on two continents, were deeply interested in the matter. For some time past vessels had been met by 'an enormous thing,' a long object, spindle-shaped, occationally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale."It is this "something" that Professor Aronnaz sets out to encounter--and thus begins the most incredible underwater journey ever. From Atlantis to the South Pole, the reader is taken through dangers, surprises, and the unsurpassed majesty of the marine world.
Download Description
An American frigate, tracking down a ship-sinking monster, faces not a living creature but an incredible invention -- a fantastic submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo. Suddenly a devastating explosion leaves just three survivors, who find themselves prisoners inside Nemo's death ship on an underwater odyssey around the world from the pearl-laden waters of Ceylon to the icy dangers of the South Pole . . .as Captain Nemo, one of the greatest villians ever created, takes his revenge on all society. More than a marvelously thrilling drama, this classic novel, written in 1870, foretells with uncanny accuracy the inventions and advanced technology of the twentieth century and has become a literary stepping-stone for generations of science fiction writers. From the Paperback edition.

Super Reader.......2007-09-01
A group of men come to misfortune at sea. They have the dubious misfortune to come to the attention of Captain Nemo and his highly advanced submarine, Nautilus. While this prevents them from drowning, they do get caught up with some of the odd Captain's other pursuits. Ned and company do certainly get some education in oceanography and marine biology along the way.
They do have to worry about what the antiheroic supergenius Nemo is actually up to, though.
Awesome!.......2007-08-06
I purchased this book to read to my five year old son. It is a great adaptation and there are pictures on every three to four pages which keeps him interested in the book. Great illustrations! We are loving every minute of it and read 2-3 chapters a night!
A great book.......2007-06-05
Twenty Thousand Leagues under The Sea by Jules Verne is one of the best
science fiction books. I would recommend the movie starring James Mason
as Captain Nemo. It is well written as all of Jules Verne's books are.
Danny Fleming, author of How to Prove The Collatz Conjecture.
20,000 leagues under the boring.......2007-05-11
The good author believes the gentle reader is fascinated by detailed descriptions of underwater flora, fauna, and geology when, in reality, gentle reader is wondering when something is going to happen. Many is the retired gent who has come to me with his list of a kabillion classics he is supposed to read before he dies and I suggest he also check out maybe a cowboy and a mystery, but he does not and he never checks out anything again. Well, a "classic" is merely a book that is still in print, possibly because the publisher does not have to pay royalties on public domain titles. Now, this book is still in print; so, by golly, it indeed qualifies as a classic. And, it is just the thing to give to a reluctant reader to prevent him from ever checking out anything again. It is definitely not a fast read by modern standards. Not that TLUTS is not a great read, but it is hard work for an average reader and should not be required of the inexperienced reader. Thus the book deserves, perhaps, a 5 star for the experienced classic reader but only a 1 star for the novice.
Wonderfully illustrated, very informative, kids love it!.......2007-03-16
My husband bought this book for our son at a visit to an aquarium, even though I thought it was too advanced for him because he's only four and half. I was wrong - my son LOVES this book! I know the age range on it is 9 to 12 and I have no doubt those ages would also enjoy reading the book themselves, but my son is constantly wanting me to read this to him and is always begging for me to read one more chapter because we usually only read one or two at a time (I will admit, I tone down the scarier parts just a bit for him because he's only four). The illustrated pages help hold his attention while I read to him even though there is a significant amount of text per page, and even my two and half year old can manage to sit through a chapter most days. I love the combination of illustration and text that allows me to read my sons more involved and advanced stories without them becoming bored because there isn't enough to hold their attention to the story. My older son loves asking questions about the pictures, especially the ones in the inserts that have information related to different aspects of the story, and I have learned a lot from those too! I definitely recommend this book and am currently looking into buying my son some more books from the DK/Eyewitness Classics series.

Great science fiction for kids!!!.......2003-02-17
I gave Captain Nemo five stars because of the strong moral to this story. I also liked the relationship between the sea creatures and Captain Nemo and his crew. I have the book and the audiobook and my friends and I are studying Jules Verne. We read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Captain Nemo is very loyal to the Jules Verne character and it has added a new set of wonderful scientific ideas to the storytelling world. I to am going to be a writer and I will start classes when I go to college.
A fantastic story-I give it ten stars.......2002-12-03
A very wonderful world opens up to you as you read this story about a future with endangered oceans and a mad warrior. I like the mixture of characters on The Nautilus, The Trinity and The Avenger. This is a well thoughout continuation of the Jules Verne classic.
Very, very hip!.......2002-10-16
My friends and I attended the MegaCon Comic Convention earlier this year and we exchanged books and comic books. I had to do a book report on Jules Verne and my teacher said I could use this book. I didn't read it all summer but I just finished it. Now I can see why all these other people are talking about this. Just the idea of Captain Nemo and his technology is great. I like the oceans a lot and now my dad is reading this Captain Nemo book. He also ordered the audiobook. What ever happened to the sequel?
Very excellent and cool!.......2002-10-14
My friends and I are doing book reports on Jules Verne. This audiobook is very cool. It allows you to imagine what Captain Nemo and his crew live like in their ocean world. I have a friend who is from Europe and he likes the idea that there are crew members from this story from other parts of the world. We are also called nerds because we like science and math. Captain Nemo makes it all worth it when it comes to being different.
Very clever and fast paced science fiction!.......2002-08-01
I've loved Jules Verne novels since I was a kid. I am very glad to see Captain Nemo and the Nautilus rise again in a classy and smart way. There are so many super heroes with super powers, Nemo uses his brains. That's a true super hero! My 14 year old daughter also liked this book. She liked the idea of Sonja and other women in this story and how they contributed their knowledge of commanding the submarines. I also bought the audiobook. It is equally fantastic.
