Book Description
For the typical American homeowner,
Great Houses on a Budget presents case studies from across the country that achieve high style at an affordable cost.
Most homeowners can only fantasize about owning and living in beautiful dream homes designed by top architects -- houses that are well beyond the reach of average consumers. This splendidly illustrated volume promises to provide a reality check by presenting beautifully designed houses by the same architects, but with one exception. The houses in this book were designed and built for clients with high standards, as well as modest budgets.
Fifteen in-depth case studies display the work of some of today's finest architects in locations ranging from California and Connecticut, to Virginia and Oregon. Each project includes lavish photography accompanied by detailed discussion of the economical construction techniques implemented in each house. With an in-depth look at square footage costs, design techniques, and low-cost building materials,
Great Houses on a Budget will provide readers with everything they need to plan a great home on even the smallest budget.

Somewhat Pleased.......2007-07-15
Good photos, and some good details and ideas, that could well be developed into an expression of your own living space.
This book delivers on EXACTLY what it is supposed to!.......2007-05-13
Look, this book is a picture book... but so are all James Grayson Trulove books. If you are not familiar with his books then you are missing out. His books are not case studies with pages of boring text. He does not teach in his books, but rather inspire. You know when you have a favorite actor and no matter what they are in you go see it... that is the type of author that Trulove is. He is constantly producing new books with great houses that can give you great new ideas. If you're expecting alot more than great pictures of great houses then get something else. But if you want to peak behind the doors of some really cool new houses then you will love this book.
Photos.......2007-05-07
As with everything else from this author, it is just a collection of pretty pictures, with absolutely no detail on materials and construction techniques. There is a reason his books are so cheap.
Great Book.......2007-02-06
I liked this book alot and refer to it often for innovative modern design in designing my own home.
No actual discussion of budgets........2006-12-17
Even though the description claims that the book provides an in depth look at square footage costs, it does not. Only a few of the houses even mention the square footage and none have information about costs. This was VERY disappointing, as it seemed to be the whole point of the book. I also have to question the position of "on a budget" one house, for instance, has an exterior that is clad in raw steel. There is no mention, of course, in what this actually cost, but it would seem not be a "budget-friendly" approach. The discussion of "Keeping costs down" for each house is a short paragraph, often two sentences. The wood framing has already been mentioned by a reviewer, another favorite of mine is the ability to open the windows allowing "temperate ocean breezes" to eliminate the need for air-conditioning. There are a few interesting ideas, and the photography is quite nice, but the book does not come close to providing what it promises.

Great Eclectic Ideas.......2007-01-30
I've gotten quite a few design books in the past couple of years, and this is one of my favorites. While I wouldn't replicate some of these designs (suitcase as end table? gothic house? blech!!), I thought that the ideas presented in the book are inventive and align with my thrift store/modern aesthetic.
What I like about the book is that presents ideas that use more creativity than money, yet dont't look cheesy/kitschy. And unlike other books that draw from thrift store finds, it doesn't look like some sterile '50s Danish furniture museum. Old stuff is mixed with modern and rustic. It's a look that's attainable and easy to live with.
I don't have the time or energy (or money!) to create a period perfect living environment, yet I want to have something that doesn't look too modern and cookie-cutter. This book I believe strikes the correct balance.
Kinda like a nice big jar of eye candy for your coffee table.......2006-03-09
Don't have a subscription to the magazine, but bet I'd like it! Also, I don't mind when magazines publish "best of" compilations of articles to a specific theme -
it saves me having to go hunt down those particular issues, which I may not have saved anyway!!
The photos in here are fabulous for examining in detail. Definitely a swell idea book. I found the prices quoted to run the gamut from REALLY low, to what I personally might consider moderately high, but I am more of an "idea gleaner" type girl than an "I want to copy this entire room down to the very tschotkes on the tschelves and not pay a penny more" type girl. And there are so many cool ideas between the pages of Home Cheap Home you'll be inspired and doing the interior design thing yourself as quickly as you can utter the words "Oh yay! Pop Art's still alive"!
Make Your Place Unique.......2006-03-08
Anyone remember the 1970s magazine, Apartment Living (or was it Apartment Life)? The style and projects in this book remind me of that innovative magazine. I wish the projects had the step-by-step instructions and graphics, but actually they look manageable even without the details.
The book starts you thinking of offbeat sources of art to make your space special. Think of kid's art, instead of pricey modern art, or spray paint glass vases silver to mimic expensive mercury glass. Iron applique letters onto throw pillows to get a monogrammed effect.
The book gives examples for rearranging what you have for greater impact. Read the list of common decorating mistakes to get started. I liked the fun touches (a window seat full of vintage sock monkeys) and the liberating free-wheeling decorating that they advocate.
The projects include turning an ice bucket into a lampshade, painting your own zebra skin rug on vinyl, slipcover your headboard, and making wooden wine crates into storage bins. A particularly striking project turned three hardback books into wall art by folding the pages. This project did include step-by-step instructions.
Don't mistake this for Shabby Chic. Yes, many of the rooms feature flea market finds, but this is not the gentle pastels and rich touches of that decorating trend. This features bold rooms with an offbeat look.
It's not cheap but..........2006-02-19
I don't know how they can call this "home cheap home". $1750 for an outdoor table & chair set? $450 for an orange lamp? $1400 for a red carpet runner? $1200 for a chandelier? I could go on & on.
Plus most of the projects they talk about were done by professionals-things powder coated, reupholstered, etc. The book kept saying they had things done because it's hard to do yourself. Not what I was looking for.
Over & over again they talked more about splurges-the book should have been called "It's not cheap, but..."
Very good, but don't buy if you have a few of the Magazines already.......2006-01-18
This is a resonably good book, but I can understand why it has disappointed so many people who bought it- it is recycled magazine content from it's first year or so of publication.
The magazine didn't come out in my country until recently so I hadn't seen this content, and this book ended up being a very cheap way of perusing the old issues- I got my copy for $1 from amazon sellers.
It isn't particularly cheap style; it's just not high-end. You could sort of cynically think of this as a book aimed at those people profiled in David Brook's 'Bobo's in Paradise'- people who, back when schlepping through their liberal arts degrees, had no idea that one day they would earn anywhere near $70,000 a year, and who also had no idea how little that would end up being. A lot it is too rich for my blood, but I still like looking and it does give a sort of aspirational/inspirational shot in the arm without sending me plunging into despair as I would if I thumbed through one of Martha's tomes.
It has a kind of retro-ironic aesthetic and there's a fair amount of do-it-yourself stuff. It all looks pretty perfectly done though.

Readers are taken through the entire transformation: preparing a space for a decorating overhaul, finding inspiration, achieving decorating goals within a tight budget, planning and organizing a project, and quick fixes and crafts projects that can refresh and beautify any outdoor space. Eighteen makeovers are profiled, showcasing a variety of spaces, including patios, porches, poolsides, balconies, sunrooms, decks, and courtyards. Kathy Peterson's Great Outdoor Decorating Makeovers.......2007-06-15
This book is an ideal resource for maximizing your outdoor space on a limited budget! It's full of wonderful and affordable outdoor decorating ideas and filled with incredible before and after photos. The author created eye-catching outdoor transformations using accessories, paint, spare furniture and low-cost ideas to turn rather drab outdoor spaces into beautiful and welcoming outdoor spaces--- all under $250. I found the book to be truly inspiring. Three well known national TV celebrities from HGTV and The Discovery Channel give the author and book many accolades. I rank it 5 stars.
Use color and repurposed indoor decor to create an inviting outdoor environment.......2006-05-10
This book gives the reader ideas on how to create an inviting outdoor living space on a budget. I live in the Southwest where outdoor living is a year 'round experience, and bought the book in hopes of developing a nice outdoor entertaining area. Ms. Peterson reminds the reader that painting isn't just for interiors. Paint has as great a bang for the buck outdoors as it does indoors. She gives a wide variety of sample palettes for the "color novice." She also teaches the reader about repurposing indoor decorative items to create an attractive outdoor living space. This is good news for those of us who have limited dollars and/or storage space -- it is much more practical to move indoor lamps, vases, cushions, etc. outside for a party and then take them back indoors to use day to day, than it is to purchase, maintain and also find storage for duplicate items to be used exclusively for outdoor entertaining. I hope other readers will find her ideas helpful, and enjoy the book as much as I have.
Budget Makeovers for Outdoor Living.......2006-03-13
If you aren't using your outdoor space much, it may be time for a makeover. This book takes rather blah patios and turns them into inviting outdoor living spaces. The best part is the price, as the author tries to keep each project under $250.
She is helped by the fact that most had decent furniture to start with, so her job was adding some cushions, plants and accessories for a polished look.
Probably the main message of the book is to pull your outdoor living space together with a unifying color scheme. Paint any furniture that doesn't match or is shabby. No need to shop for new items, just bring things from inside the house outside.
She breaks each project down into steps, showing how the changes meet the homeowners needs. I deducted one star since the book doesn't give actual how-to on the projects (sewing, painting).
It is useful to get ideas on grouping your furniture and using color for an attractive outdoor area (pool area, porch, balcony, patio, sunroom, courtyard, etc.)
I liked the idea of painting lines on concrete for a faux tile look. The book shows lots of colorful before and after photos.

I'm so glad I got this.......2003-01-23
This was hilarious! Excellant plot, lots of humor, wonderful art, I'd recommend this to just about everyone I know. I haven't seen the anime, but from what I've heard this seems to be the manga teh TV series was based on. This second part covors Lina and Gourry meeting Zelgadis and Rezo for the first time, and ends when Gourry and Lina are separated.
