Book Description

Green. It conjures images of a meadow in spring for some, and the color of money for others. What does "green" have to do with our homes? In essence, green building-or sustainable building-means being smart about how we use energy, water, and building materials so that we can live well without needlessly damaging the environment. Creating a good green home isn't just about conservation, about using less or saving more-although that's certainly part of it. It's about creating better homes that are easier on the environment, less expensive over the long term, and more delightful to come home to. That's the message Jennifer Roberts wants to share in Good Green Homes, the ultimate new guide for people who want to live in comfortable, healthy, environmentally conscious homes. With some simple steps outlined in this book, you can save money, and do your part to help save the environment. For instance, using an energy-efficient light bulb saves you money. It also results in less demand for electricity, which in turn results in less pollution from power plants, which may help a child with asthma breathe a little easier. If you associate green-built housing with the unconventional or the quirky-tree houses, geodesic domes, dwellings constructed of tires or soda bottles-think again. Perfect for homeowners, remodelers, renters (who might be surprised by how much is within their power to change), architects, builders, and interior designers, this book lays out seven fundamental principles of green building, illustrated with more than 150 color and 20 black and white photographs of more than twenty-five homes. Jennifer Roberts launched two retail stores in San Francisco specializing in environmentally sensible consumer products, including household goods; and is a freelance writer and editor on topics that include energy-efficient building design and systems.

4 out of 5 stars A good start..........2007-01-18

This is an excellent book for those seeking an introduction to environmentally sound home building. There are many good general points and examples of green homes. It is short on details for actual designers but good for home builders who need to read this information desperately and stop building mega-mansions with 5 bedrooms for families with one kid.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-07-12

Doesn't give a detailed analysis of anything, but is a great tool for people wanting a basic understanding of green building, energy efficient techniques, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but...........2004-10-29

This book no doubt makes a lovely addition to my coffee table. I feel so inspired and now.. how do I do it?? I was looking for more practical advice that addressed all my reasons for wanting to remodel green - protecting my family's health and our planet's natural resources and my financial savings. If the intention was to create a stunning, inspiring book - great job. If it was to really explain what green is and exactly how to do it, I think I'd look to books like "Green Remodeling" by Johnston and Master or read Environmental Building News....

5 out of 5 stars Real Homes that Make a Difference.......2004-03-03

"A recent poll revealed that an astounding 96% of consumers are willing to pay more for green features in a home, and 91% feel that energy-efficient features in a new home were extremely or very important."

If you are planning to redecorate or remodel, Good Green Homes offers ideas, real-world advice and lots of inspiration. Jennifer Roberts is a freelance writer who specializes in sustainable building, energy efficiency and corporate social responsibility. She helps people make choices that encourage positive change in their living environments. She answers the following questions:

How does having a "green" home actually save money?
How can someone who rents their home make significant changes?
What are some ways to protect and improve the quality of air inside our homes?
What are "rapidly renewable sources?"
How can you afford a green home on a limited budget?

Jennifer is also a merchandising manager for the Marina Green stores and joys introducing consumers to the joys of stylish clothes made from organically grown cotton, healthy paints, energy-efficient light bulbs, tableware made from recycled materials and environmentally friendly alternatives to everyday household products.

Featured Homes Include:

A Delightful Cottage
An Ecofriendly addition to a historic home
A Trio of Healthy and Green City Homes
An Artist's studio on a Wooded Island
A Vacation Retreat in the Wine Country
A Neighborhood of Homes
A Remodeled Victorian Flat

It is rather shocking to learn that the air inside our homes can be five times more polluted than the air outside. One look at your energy bill might convince you to read this book.

These homes don't really look all that different, but there are features like skylights to save electricity or there is a home that is naturally cooled, heated and lit. Some homes have solar water-heating systems for the summer and a unique solar power system blended right in with a backyard trellis to generate electricity from the sun.

The section on air quality was of interest to me because I am always moving my Austin air filter about the house.

The "Wine Country Retreat" looked like a house I could live in because it even has a tower. Well, the pools also looked rather inviting.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book of Its Kind!.......2004-01-01

This book is a gift to the Earth and to so many of the people who inhabit it! Good Green Homes is educational and practical in an amazingly palatable way...that is to say, it is most enjoyable reading; and at the end one is so much wiser than when one began. It is a visual feast. The concept of environmentally sensitive choices in every aspect of the home is brought to the whole spectrum of the population, from new construction to renters to "what can I do with what I've got." This book is beautiful, user friendly and, above all, inspirational. I kept saying, "I can do that! I can take that action. I can make a difference, and I want to!" Bravo!

Book Description

With more than 150 color photographs, comprehensive text, and extensive resource lists of recommended products, manufacturers, and retailers, Good Green Kitchens is a must-have-whether taking small steps to a green kitchen, or planning a thorough remodel. This newest book from green living advocate, Jennifer Roberts, is loaded with inspiration and information for creating a dream green kitchen. What makes a kitchen green? Good Green Kitchens shows that eco-friendly design is a continuum that's shaded from light to dark green. At the light green end are easy-to-do steps such as choosing less polluting paints or selecting energy-efficient appliances. At the darker green end are strategies like using certified or reclaimed wood, consciously choosing to simplify or downsize, or using the kitchen project as a launching point for greening the whole house. Good Green Kitchens gives the low-down on what's green and what's not when it comes to kitchen design. It includes: up-close profiles of beautiful, green kitchens and the people who created them; tips for environmentally responsible redecorating, remodeling, and building from the ground up; in-depth chapters on greener alternatives for floors, cabinets, countertops, and appliances; strategies for greening the whole house; tips for keeping costs in check; and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Best green kitchen resource.......2007-09-21

I found Good Green Kitchens to be an excellent resource. The information is comprehensive, unbiased, and clearly presented. It's also a great read and beautifully put together. The mix of reference information, case studies, and design tips works very well. I think that the quality of content is far better than most other home design books.

Anyone planning a "green" kitchen remodel will find this book very helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Green or greenwash?.......2007-03-17

This book is not worth much of a review. Far from being "green" it's what I'd call "greenwash". It's for people with a spare $20,000 - $50,000 who want to feel good by what they BUY, but there is precious little to indicate that the kitchens pictured actually lead to living a green life. You can't buy more stuff to become green - that's an oxymoron. The first thing to DO to have a green kitchen is to reduce your ecological footprint by what you do and then build a kitchen around your genuinely green lifestyle. This book is based on the unstated assumption that you first dream of living a green life, then you drool over plans and then you buy lots of stuff and that somehow makes you green. Sorry - this might fool your friends, it might even fool yoursdelf, but it won't fool the planet. Almost anyone can reduce their ecological footprint by a change in behaviour far more than they could by following the examples here. Any book on green design that features pictures of buildings, rooms and kitchens without people in them living a green lifestyle is - by my reckoning - just another example of greenwash. I give it two stars rather than one because there are a few ideas here that you might be able to adapt to support a green life. But you'll need to go elsewhere to learn about ecological footprint, environmental load and living green. There is one-third of a page on "environmental costs" when such a book should feature this at its core and the rest of the book should be about building a life and a kitchen around this principle.

5 out of 5 stars Green, but top of the line, Kitchens.......2006-09-30

What? Yet another book on kitchens? And what does GREEN mean in terms of a kitchen, certainly not the color?

San Francisco based writer Jennifer Roberts has developed a philosophy that discusses the remodelling of a kitchen in terms of its impact on the world.

Key to her philosophies are reuse, recycle, salvage, and when buying new avoiding old-growth or tropical woods, particleboard or plywood made with urea formaldehyde-based glues (that can out-gas bad things into your house). Green includes appliances that use less energy, less water, and cost little more (if any more) than un-green equipment.

The book is a heavily illustrated study of several green kitchens that clearly illustrate that being green does not have a penalty in design, style or utility. Nor do they have to be cheaply made. Here are green kitchens with professional grade appliances.

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2004-10-29

I found this book to be a bit scattered. I constantly found myself flipping to other parts of the book for reference, which was a bit annoying. I found that I didn't finish the book for those reasons.

3 out of 5 stars Basic introduction.......2000-06-03

Jane Smiths review seemed a bit biased. I will agree that this book has different illustrated different approaches in england than in CA. But then again CA at times seems to think they are a different country than the entire US. It seems she didn't review the book for what it was rather than her own personal agenda.

This book can be used to get a basic overview of what it means to take a sustainable approach. THe Author limited its scope to dealing with remedies for existing houses and didn't not focus on new development. Its target audience seemed to be the average Joe.

The author does not get to specific on remedies but at least touches on all of the major issues providing an outline for further research or a guide to know what to look out for.

I would recomend this book to anyone with no backround or understanding of sustainable building looking for an good introduction.

1 out of 5 stars Mostly Useless.......1999-12-07

Don't kill any trees by bothering to buy this book. In fact, don't waste any brain cells by trying to read it either. When I bought this book I was looking for some sensible ways to reduce my impact on the environment as I was finishing my basement. I had already read about easy energy saving measures like better insulation and fluorescent lighting and was looking for a little more in depth knowledge. I certainly didn't get it here. The author advocates wood burning stoves and construction, without taking into consideration the durability and recyclability of other materials and the destruction to forests caused by clearcutting. He does not seem to understand that environmental problems have different solutions in England than they do in California. Worse yet, on several occasions he is just plain wrong. On page 104, while describing photovoltaic cells, he says that "the negative electrons are activated." I was forced to assume that the author was a total flake and that the Union of Concerned Scientists had failed to read this book when they recommended it in their otherwise excellent book, "The consumer's guide to effective environmental choices." Though there is some good information in this book, if you can filter it out from the useless junk, you don't need to read it, and if you can't, get a better book and skip the misinformation in this one.

5 out of 5 stars A WEALTH OF INFORMATION AND JEWELS!.......2004-04-14

Born in 1846 in St. Petersburg, Russia, perhaps little at his birth, save for his father's profession as a jeweler, presaged the intricately exquisite art objects that Carl Faberge would someday create.

In fact, the earliest products of his house have been described as "somewhat clumsy gold bracelets." Today his name is synonymous with the incomparably beautiful.

Famous for his jewel adorned Imperial Easter eggs, Faberge the artisan produced so much more - jewelry, picture frames, presentation boxes, cigarette cases. More than 300 stunning full-color pages bring these treasures to us.

The text is impeccably researched and written.

2 or 3 ideas sparked my imagination, but most projects in the book are old news or can be completed with much better technology now.

The book has lots of great ideas, unfortunately, most of them require the photo to be photocopied. I wanted ideas that would have allowed me to use my inkjet printer. It would be nice if the book description had mentioned this fact.

                      Book Description

Douglas Rushkoff, author of eight books on media and culture, as well as the novels Ecstasy Club and Exit Strategy, marks his graphic novel debut with Club Zero-G. Teaming with Canadian independent comic artist Steph Dumais, Rushkoff has delivered America's answer to Japan's anime: a mind-altering journey into a universe where consensus reality is up for grabs.

The story follows Zeke, a gangly, unpopular, 19-year-old college student-a townie who also happens to attend the elite college in his community-who has discovered a terrific new club where he is accepted and popular. There's only one catch: everyone at the club is dreaming. It only exists in the shared dream consciousness of its participants. If at all.

For there's the rub: Zeke's friends think he is simply going crazy. His girlfriend in the club won't even acknowledge his existence in real life.

As Zeke descends further into the Club Zero-G reality, he learns that this shared dream space is actually a psychic field created by four mutant children from the future-the last of their kind, conceived by human space travelers in zero gravity and exhibiting strange deformities and abilities. Living in a future where independent thinking is considered a threat to "consensus," they are hunted by the authorities, and seek the help of teens from the 21st century who, they hope, can still alter the course of reality.

But Zeke eventually learns this is all a setup, and he is being used by the militaries of the present and the future as a portal into the psychic field of the Zero-G kids, so they can be destroyed. Unless, of course, he is just going mad.

The battle for Zeke's mind becomes an interdimensional battle for reality itself, in this daring, adult, American, anime adventure.

If you are a parent, buy this graphical novel for your kids. If you are a young growing up human -- buy this book, too. It is a good map for the journey in exploring the under-layer and inner-mechanics of "LIFE".

2 out of 5 stars Stay away from this unless your life feels hollow.............2005-10-15

Ok first off the art work is actually pretty damn good if you like comic art from 40z comics by Jim Mahfood, Invader Zim, Johnny homiciadal maniac ect..... But, seriously don't buy this flaming turd.... I checked this out from something called the Library which lets you look at books for free! Story plot is very very bad.....Take matrix take bill and teds adventure and spice in some akira rip offs and you have this bland book. The consensus has been slowly taking away our dreams towards making us all mindless slaves in our "awaken" reality. But, our hero Zeke gets to club zero thanks to some akira clones that brought certain people to the club. He's the key for the akira clones to break on through to the other side ie the present awoken world. And also they need him to help stop the consensus from making everyone mindless in either realm. Oi enough of this crap it goes on and on. Zeke gets those at the club to remember it in awaken world dad isnt dad or is he. Consense can offer him everything if he stops and oh boy big confirtation at the end where it's all up to Zeke to deterimine what's going to happen to reality as we know... What does he do?!?!? Oh guess what one makes their own choices and decisions in life cause Zeke choose's YOU!! Yes YOU!! Thats right!!! What the F crap ending is this?!? Why it's something out of choose your own adventure book or some crappy ass lesson brought to you by barny the loveable dinasour! The only way you could give this a 5 star rating is if your brain is rotted out on E bomb cause like matirx 2 half of this book waste pages just showing the kids at rave after rave!

                      5 out of 5 stars LAIN???.......2004-06-06

What I can guess reading the book description is that this book is a "copy" of an anime series called Serial Experiments Lain, that ironically is inspired in some of rushkoff's stuff... well, lain is not a copy of rushkoff's books, it only uses some of him ideas to create a different story, but this graphic novel is almost a lain copy... but i think we can take it as a mutual homage :)

5 out of 5 stars Words do not do justice..........2004-05-25

I am not sure how writing a review for a graphic novel could ever do it justice? Your best bet is to buy this, read it once, then again to make sure you really just read/saw what you did...then, like me...write a glowing review and buy one as a Bar Mitzvah gift (as I just did...).
