5 out of 5 stars Better than expected!.......2007-09-16

This book was everything I was hoping for & more! So much practical information and ideas. This book had ideas no matter where your fireplace is located or what your style is.

2 out of 5 stars Not a single idea for me.......2007-02-26

Like another reviewer said, The Fireplace Design Sourcebook by Melissa Cardona is a much better choice. Why he gave this book 5 stars anyway I can't figure out. I have over 20 postits marking pages in the other book and not a single one in this book. Not a single idea for the stone, mantle, or anything worth using. Way too much filler writing that didn't apply to anything, describing styles and types that are never applied in real world designs.

"The Inglenook is a charmingly old-fashioned idea and the word itself is equally quaint. Ingle is a British word for..." Well, you get the idea.

I can see the point that this book has a good decorating focus, but I still don't think it is a great book even for that and if you are just looking for fireplace ideas I think you will find this lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-10-11

The Better Homes & Gardens book "Fireplace Decorating & Planning Ideas" is an excellent book. We are building a new home, and were looking for fireplace designs for ideas. There is also a lot of "how to" information, in which we weren't particularly interesed, but the book gave us some good ideas. An even better book, for our application, which we ordered at the same time, is a Schiffer Book by Melissa Cardona entitled "The Fireplace Design Sourcebook" It has more photographs, and an enormous variety of fireplace designs to peruse.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Fireplace Book.......2004-01-01

This is the best fireplace book I have seen. First of all the book has hundreds of beautiful and varied fireplace pictures. The pictures are great because they show the fireplaces in the home, decorated, and with the home furnishings around them. They are all warm and inviting although very different. The text of the book flows well also. First it helps even a novice decorator find the styles that work with your personality and home. Then it breaks down fireplace ideas by the different living areas in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Fireplace: Decorating and Planning Ideas.......2002-08-25

My wonderful brother built a beautiful fireplace mantel and surround for me. I got my inspiration from this great book. I also use it for ideas for decorating the mantel - I love to change the look often.

5 out of 5 stars Temper, temper..........2003-05-16

This absolutely enormous book is one of the classics on musical temperament; for some reason most such books are out of print and hard to get hold of, and this is no exception. The title has got cut off in the Amazon entry - the full title is: "Tuning: Containing the Perfection of Eighteenth-Century Temperament, the Lost Art of Nineteenth-Century Temperment and the Science of Equal Temperment, Complete with Instructions for Aural and Electronic Tuning." It is a mixture of history of tunings and temperaments, and explicit tuning instructions for various temperaments. An interesting thread running through the book is a detailed argument to the effect that equal temperament was not commonplace until the twentieth century.

If you're interested in this book, you might want to get hold of the recordings by Enid Katahn, "Six degrees of Tonality" and "Beethoven in the Temperaments." The former consists of recordings of a number of pieces from different periods of musical history, played on a piano tuned by Edward Foote in temperaments appropriate to the era. Also included are three different takes of the Mozart Fantasie Kv.397 in meantone, "Prelleur" temperament and equal temperament.

Other books you might want to check out are Barbour's "Tuning and Temperament" and Dominique Devie's "Le Tempérament Musical."

      Book Description

Selecting journals that speak for a very large number of topics addressed by the conservative press, this volume profiles selected conservative journals published since 1787. The conservative press has scarcely spoken with a single voice, whether the topics treated or even the time inhabited are the same or different. Yet, these journals testify to the persistent vigor and importance of conservatism. Together they provide a focused survey of the history of American conservative thought from the late 18th Century to the late 19th Century. Along with the companion volume covering the 20th Century conservative press, the book provides an important resource on conservative thought in America. Despite the disparities in conservative intellectual thought, the journals covered, even the more idiosyncratic and extreme, are connected by their core values of conservatism. The book is organized into sections reflecting these connections. The first section covers journals associated with Federal, Whig, or, in the Civil War era, Northern Democratic political interests. A later section includes journals sharing an attachment to Southern conservative values during the antebellum and Reconstruction periods. Two sections deal, respectively, with 19th Century Orthodox Protestant periodicals and 19th Century Catholic and Episcopal journals, and yet another section discusses journals united by a major focus on literary topics and cultural connections.

        Book Description

This unique and extraordinarily rich collection of writings offers a thematic approach to understanding the various theories of art that illumined the direction of nineteenth-century artists as diverse as Tommaso Minardi and Georges Seurat. It is significant that during the nineteenth century most artists felt compelled to found their artistic practice on a consciously established premise.

                Book Description

This overview of the "sister arts" of the nineteenth century by younger scholars in art history, literature, and American studies presents a startling array of perspectives on the fundamental role played by images in culture and society. Drawing on the latest thinking about developments in literary theory and cultural studies, the contributors situate paintings, sculpture, monument art, and literary images within a variety of cultural contexts. A wide range of figures are reassessed, including the painters Charles Wilson Peale, George Caleb Bingham, and Mary Cassatt, and such writers as James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau.

                    Book Description

In today's culture, which hinges so much on visual spectacle, museums are reassessing their role and function as centers for entertainment and education. Should museums respond to the demand for staging "events" or should they join rank as guardians of our cultural heritage? Is the collection key, or should the museum focus on responding to public demand? Strategies of Display contributes to this very current debate through a historical consideration of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, renowned as far back as the 19th century for having the best interior layout of all Dutch museums. After moving to a new building in 1935, the museum gained national and international recognition as a milestone in modern museum architecture, due to its clearly designed floor-plan, well-lit and sober galleries with refined presentations and, most especially, its innovative lighting. Comparing the innovative exhibitions held at this Rotterdam museum with developments at other museums clarifies how its innovations in exhibition design were representative for and sometimes way ahead of techniques used in institutions such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Natural History in London, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Unique visual documentation literally captures this history in images, and comparisons with contemporaneous shop and department store displays provides crucial contextualization. Essay by Julia Noordegraaf. Paperback, 6.75 x 9.5 in. / 328 pgs / 200 b&w.

For more than three decades Frans de Waal, the author of best-sellers such as Chimpanzee Politics and Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape, has studied monkeys and apes in zoos, research parks, and field settings. Photographing his subjects over the years, de Waal has compiled a unique family album of our closest animal relatives. To capture the social life of primates, and their natural communication, requires intimate knowledge, which is abundantly present here, in the work of one of the world's foremost primatologists. Culled from the thousands of images de Waal has taken, these photographs capture social interaction in bonobos, chimpanzees, capuchin monkeys, baboons, and macaques showing the subtle gestures, expressions, and movements that elude most nature photographers or casual observers.
De Waal supplies extended captions discussing each photograph, offering descriptions that range from personal observations and impressions to professional interpretation. The result is a view of our primate family that is both intensely moving and personal, also richly evocative of all that science can tell us of primate society. In his introduction, de Waal elaborates on his work, his mission in this volume, and the particular challenges of animal action photography.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful work of portraiture.......2004-04-03

"My Family Album" catalogs 30 years of de Waal's black and white photographs of both wild and captive primates. The bulk of the shots are of chimps and bonobos, but a third are of monkeys and there are striking photographs all around. While the principle effect of the book is to get across the intelligence, complexity and beauty of these fellow animals, there are enough funny faces for the book to work on that level.

                    5 out of 5 stars A loving photographic tribute.......2003-12-29

Noted primatologist Frans de Waal has put together a beautifully printed pictorial tribute to primates. In high quality black-and-white photographs, he documents similarities and differences among non-human primates in areas as diverse as play, confrontation, sex, familial ties, and social activities. The accompanying text describes not only the meaning behind the pictures but also, in true de Waal form, how they relate to human behavior. Although de Waal is a scientist, this concise and clearly written book is meant for the lay reader.

De Waal's specialty is the study of non-human primates in captivity, so the majority of these photographs do not show monkeys and apes in their native habitat. Instead, you'll find remarkable close-ups of expressions and interactions that capture moments of the individual lives. Although de Waal is best known for his study of chimpanzees and bonobos, he includes photographs of macaques, capuchins, baboons, and snow monkeys.

This book is a real treat. I recommend it highly for anyone who has an interest in animal life.

                    5 out of 5 stars They're not like us, they're unique.......2003-12-28

Frans de Waal's collection of primate portraits covers various species of monkeys in many social situations. Long hours spent with his subjects means that Waal had their total trust when photographing them. Thus, his subjects have a natural, unforced manner that allows their true nature to shine through. Waal's accomplishment, in this occasionally hilarious, frequently touching, but always fascinating collection of photographs is that he transcends the notion that the value of primates lies in how much they are like humans. His texts and pictures reveal them not as inferior versions of homo sapiens, but simply as @what they are: intelligent, sensitive, highly socially evolved creatures. This is a beautiful and fascinating book.

4 out of 5 stars Saint Tail gets a new sidekick........2003-09-16

The reason I give this book four stars instead of five is because of the pages look and how flimsy the book is.
                    First chapter:
Lina makes a trap for Saint Tail. But Saint Tail tricks her into making her think that Saint Tail is really a boy.
                    Second chapter:
Saint Tail saves a hedgehog who becomes her new sidekick.
                    Third chapter:
Saint Tail steals film before it's exposed in the school paper.
                    Fourth chapter:
Saint Tail retrieves a special mirror.

5 out of 5 stars Great and important events!!!.......2003-05-17

If you read the second S.T. than[ if you haven't read this one], you should this. It's really funny in the first chapter. Lina tries to trick Saint Tail, but in the end, it's Saint Tail who tricks Lina. And she stops pesturing Meimi. In the second chapter, Saint Tail saves a hedgehog. And it becomes Meimi's pet. In the third chapter, Saint Tail steals a roll of film before it's shown in the school paper. In the fourth chapter, Saint Tail steals a mirror that shows the real you. And Asuka sees Meimi in it.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it coming!!!!.......2002-01-19

I can't believe how much this series has grown on me. It started out as just wanting to read something after Sailor Moon and not expecting much, but boy was I wrong. I have been caught in the chase for Saint Tail. This series is excellent. Light-hearted, romantic, humurous twists, loving relationships and....weird ones too, and not to mention as most Manga does....morals. This series is good for any ages. ( But I would recomend 11 and up), it has it's own spot on the shelf next to Sailor Moon. But as this is the 3rd book in the series, you should read the first two or you will be missing quite a bit of dialogue. I hope everyone enjoys this series as much as I do.
