Book Description
Profusely illustrated with fine instances of architectural experimentation through the centuries, Experiencing Architecture manages to convey the intellectual excitement of superb design. From teacups, riding boots, golf balls, and underwater sculpture to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of the Peking Winter Palace, the author ranges over the less-familiar byways of designing excellence.
At one time, writes Rasmussen, "the entire community tool part in forming the dwellings and implements they used. The individual was in fruitful contact with these things; the anonymous houses were built with a natural feeling for place, materials and use and the result was a remarkably suitable comeliness. Today, in our highly civilized society, the houses which ordinary people are doomed to live in and gaze upon are on the whole without quality. We cannot, however, go back to the old method of personally supervised handicrafts. We must strive to advance by arousing interest in and understanding of the work the architect does. The basis of competent professionalism is a sympathetic and knowledgeable group of amateurs, of non-professional art lovers."

experiencing architcture.......2005-09-02
I like this book very much, while reading, you feel like being on the place that is described and feel the architectural sensation.
Save a space in ur bookshelf for this!!.......2005-08-30
Yes, it's a must-have, yes u read it more than once and yes it is just the book for any architect or designer or anyone interested in the field..
This book introduces you to architecture...it's really enlightening especially to those who think that architecture is putting a couple of bricks together to come up with a building, `cause architecture is more than that, it's more or less like a way of living...
So that's why i highly recommend this book to 1st year students or those who are about to pursue a future in architecture..
but still this book is great for seniors and architects in general...
the only think n this book that needs adjustment is the display or the presentation...i know it shouldn't matter as long as the book is good...but just as a way to make the books more appealing especially for those who don't like reading all that much... but if you r the kind of person who doesn't mind that u'll enjoy the book all the same.. I really think this book should b taught in any architecture class
understanding=experiencing.......2004-12-04
this is a classic book on how to deal with architecture.
it is not a graphic game, instead architecture is an experience.
to understand it means experiencing it with our senses.
thats i have learned from this book.
Excellent and Accessible Architectural Overview.......2004-03-13
I am interested in architecture as a hobby, and as a potential career at some point in the future, so the perspective I had when reading this book was that of an informed amateur. I can't praise this little book enough. In its pages are the best explanations and analyses of contrasts, textures, shapes, and colors that I have seen in one single, condensed location.
Originally published in Denmark in 1959, and therefore lacking some of the more contemporary and postmodern design trends, this is an invaluable analysis of primarily European design through the mid twentieth century. This book is profusely illustrated with black and white photographs (most of which were taken by Rasmussen himself) and a fair number of drawings, all of which greatly assist the reader with his understanding of the material.
Specific buildings mentioned are too numerous to list, but the run the gamut from St. Peter's basilica in Rome, to the haunting and sinister Palazzetto Zuccari (also in Rome), to the ultramodern Johnson Wax Company building in Racine, Wisconsin by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the very modern study in open spaces found in the Copenhagen Police Headquarters (one of my personal favorites.)
This would be a useful guide to architects, and is the single best introduction to historical architectural style that I have yet found. Anyone with even a passing interest in architectural design or history would love this book.
A Great Experience.......2003-10-01
When I was looking for some books to begin to learn about architecture (on a purely amateur level), someone recommended "Experiencing Architecture". I could not be happier with this book. The author consistently uses simple, concrete and engaging examples to illustrate his points. He compares and contrasts; uses buildings, sidewalks, windows, doorways, and steps from all over the world and across the centuries. Given my love of travel and history these references (liberally illustrated throughout the book in black and white photographs and some drawings) brought the book to life and added an additional dimension of enjoyment.
The reviews printed on the back cover say it all-"Lively without ever becoming condescending...learned without ever becoming dull" and "...so lucid and clear that every layman and beginner will be able to understand and to enjoy it". I can't recommend the book enough for anyone that has even the slightest interest in learning about architecture.
Book Description
The face is the most important feature of a doll -- it is also the most challenging. So it is surprising that there is so little instruction available on creating doll faces. This book fills that void.
Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives her tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together, and much more.
Every aspect of doll making is covered -- from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolor pencils, acrylics, and fabric paints to color a face, how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading, and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids, and sculpted lips.

What fun!.......2007-06-03
This is the first book I was included in as an artist and Pattis patterns are so inspirational! Her dolls are beautiful and creative and a joy to make. I got to do the collage version and after several days of planning, I gave up and just played! That was the ticket!
Patti is an amazing dollmaker and I am lucky enough to live in San Diego where we share a home town doll club. I recommend, in fact, I insist (!) that all of you creative doll creators go right out and buy it! You wont be disapointed!

Great resource, Excellent source for beginners.......2007-08-23
This book is filled with inspirational ideas and all the techniques needed to complete projects. Excellent for someone new to the craft.
Interesting, good instructions.......2007-05-13
I bought this book, and several others, to use for a project in my highschool art classes. This is the one the kids looked at most. It had good instructions and ideas.
iI cannot put down that book!!!.......2007-03-25
I have bought this book as an introduction to altered books and since then I cannot put it down. It is true that people who are experienced in the art of altering books may find it a little limited. But Bev Brazelton is such a talented artist! It is a yummy book for the eyes!
The book itself is devided is different parts showing different techniques from the most elementary ones to the more elaborated ones.
I truly recommand this book.
It is so inspiring!
Good beginner hands-on book.......2007-02-19
I've done almost no altered-book work, and I've done a bit more collage. I took this book out of the library as part of some research into paper art techniques.
This book's organization is straightforward. Brazelton starts by explaining the basic materials and supplies used, in an organized and detailed fashion, and then teaches one specific technique at a time. This method seems good for people who know very little about the art and like to learn by working hands-on with a specific set of instructions. The author is very encouraging.
A couple of minor criticisms: My enjoyment of the book was marred a bit because I just don't like the author's artistic style very much. I also found it irritating that Brazelton used the same basic approach over and over (multiple layers of color washes) on each segment. I wish the author had added at least a few photos of other artist's works so I could see some other ways to approach altered books.
Nice.......2007-02-16
This book is an awesome purchase for someone interested in learning about altered books. Detailed, good examples, techniques. Good choice.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite of several titles.......2007-02-19
I have dabbled with collage and assemblage and want to do more. What I mainly want is info on supplies and technique, rather than an overview of what other artists are doing in the field, or a history of the art, or coaching to overcome fear of doing art. I took six collage and altered book books out of the library. This one worked best for me. The information about what supplies, adhesives, and papers/boards to use was well organized, clear and simple. Each technique was presented in a straightforward, step by step way accompanied by examples. This book had more techniques in it that seemed like ones I would want to work with than some of the other books - I'm not at a stage where I want to build a complicated studio setup or use photocopiers and photography a whole lot in my artwork, but I appreciate knowing about techniques that are a little more advanced than gluing paper down.
great book for learning.......2007-01-05
This book was actually a text book for a college class. As a not very artistic person, I found some of the projects to be a bit intimidating. However, the explanations were very helpful. The pictures are beautiful. I found the descriptions of the elements of design very helpful.
Collage "Bible".......2006-12-29
*****
I have been reading collage books in order to get ready for a collage class I'm taking next month; while all the ones I've read have their strong points, this book is truly the "Bible" of collage---it contains the widest and most in-depth information of all of the books I've read. It covers so many topics, and for a beginner, enables me to see just what can be done with collage. As I become more experienced, though, I am certain that I will refer to it again and again.
Ever type of collage conceivable to me is covered here, with step by step instruction. It is written in an instructional (as opposed to entertaining) style, and is definitely a reference book, but one that I think every collage artist should have.
If you are wanting to learn more about collage and can only afford one book, this one is it. It covers many different styles, so unlike other books, if your style is not the same as the author's, you might be left out---no chance of that with this book.
Highly recommended.

Useful text.......2006-11-10
This book does offer specific projects and yet leaves an open-ended aspect for artist innovation and personal touch. There are a lot of methods explored and so this text is a great one in addition to the works of others in this genre. The greatest part about this book is that contemporary collage artists are featured and this gives the reader a connection with his/her peers. There is no "art history" and "these are the famous collage artists" feel to this book: it is 100% TODAY people who are creating collage art. This aspect makes the world of collage feel approachable and in the here and now.
Very Creative Collages.......2006-01-19
I've always admired collages and remember when it was routine to make them in grade school. As an adult, I love crafts but have not ventured into the collage arena.
I agree the instructions and projects were generally easy to follow, but looking at some of the pictures made you think, "there is no way I can do that"! Because of this book though, I am encouraged that I can start small and work up. The book shows beautiful collages that I have not seen in other books. It looks as if it would be helpful to the beginner, even if it is a little intimidating, looking at the gorgeous collages. I have already started saving magazines and other materials.
A couple of my favorites and the least intimidating (to me) were the Found Papers Collage and Working With Printed Words collage (pg 18-19). The rooster on page 35 clearly demonstrates the process and combines basic collage process. My goal is to work up to something like the awesome portrait collage on page 29.
Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful ideas - and beautifully presented. Inspiring!.......2006-09-13
This book was an inspiration for me to begin creating collages for several friends planning memorial services for their family members. I found that the process of collecting the materials together with the family was a special time for them (materials included everything from photos to flowers from a dried bridal bouquet, to hankerchiefs, jewelry, and even a piece of a blotter with doodles). And on each occasion, the collage became a treasured keepsake for the family after the service. So, I'm grateful to this book for its inspirational effect on me -- I've found several new areas to explore thanks to this book.
There are some really unique ideas here (like the CD collages and the collage-covered table) that go beyond many books on collage that I've come across. Lark Books does tend to be very reliable (in my experience anyway - I have several craft books from Lark). The books tend to have experienced crafters/artists as authors, and there is attention paid to process and to one's working environment as well as to projects. Materials lists and photographs are always of high quality, and that is the case with CREATIVE COLLAGE FOR CRAFTERS too.
I don't think it's possible to look through this book without being inspired to try at least ONE new collage technique -- this book is terrific. One of the nicest I've seen, and I've collected a good many over the years. I particularly like the 'Hunting and Gathering' chapter that encourages you to open your eyes to completely new kinds of materials. It was while reading that chapter that I had my 'aha!' moment when I came up with the idea for Memorial Collages.
Artwork and crafting is such a personal thing that any review of this book will naturally be highly subjective. Taking that into consideration, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to do collage and is seeking new inspiration. You will definitely find it here!
Reality Check.......2004-02-07
This book is just OK..rather blah compared to other books on the subject of collage. Before buying this book based on the previous review (which was written by a self-promoting "fine art collage artist" who's work is included in this book) Go to a library and look inside to see for yourself. Honestly, I found nothing new or exciting to make this worth the money. You can get as much inspiration by looking up the word *collage* in a dictionary. I do give 2 stars for the attempt to reach a larger than typical audience of this art. And to the crafters out there, don't let anyone talk down to you about your "level", creative spirit is fabulous any way you express it.
Fine Artist looks at Creative Collage for Crafters.......2001-01-20
Katherine Duncan Aimone has done a great job of skillfully presenting collage as a craft with wonderful illustrations. As a fine art collage artist I was pleased to be included in the book even though it is primarily for those working at the craft level. There is a Gallery section showing the fine art potential of collage that will perhaps encourage those beginning to raise the bar and try to create something in the fine art realm. This is a beautiful book to look at and even better to read. For the person interested in collage Katherine illustrates many ways to experiment ending in something you will be proud of. For the person interested in carrying it further the information is there to learn about the elements of art along with the deifferent approaches to collage. This is a great book that will catch you by surprise with the carefully chosen content. I highly recommend it to both non-professionals as well as professionals. Carole Bleistein n.c.s. Customer Reviews:
For beginners, not advanced amateurs and professionals.......2004-06-13
The sub-title of the book says "Techniques for the Advanced Amateur and Professional." Hardly. This is simply one of many generalist photography books geared to beginners and "non-advanced" amateurs. Don't expect to find anything that isn't in dozens of similar books. The photos are average, and aren't helped by the lacklustre quality of the printing.
Great book.......2003-11-26
Great book that teaches a lot about "outdoor photography". Equipment, interesting technigues, locations, and many other topics are explained with many examples. I am mostly interested in landscape photography and found many advices very usefull. Highly recomended.
Great book - very helpful.......2003-01-13
This is the most helpful photo book I have ever seen! The illustrations are superb, with helpful captions. Moreover, it's good for beginning levels despite what the subtitle says. I highly recommend it. Worth every penny. Also a great gift for other photographer friends.
More winning pictures needed.......2002-12-01
This book is essentially true to its title of the Art of Outdoor Photography as opposed to the science of... The author offers a lucid and accessible narrative which could generate insight for beginner or intermediate photographers. However, I felt that many of the pictures in the book were quite frankly not impressive or inspiring. It is almost as if he was only willing to part with those that he didn't want to sell elsewhere. Could be useful as part of a larger collection of books on this subject but look elsewhere for stunning photographs.
WOW!! What a book!.......2002-09-01
Absolutely amazing!! This is one of the BEST photography books out there. I have bought many books on photography, but this one has absolutely captivated me. Have you ever been ever been awestruck by some lovely outdoor scenery, taken pictures of that landscape , got the film developed and printed shook your head in bewilderment and said "what the heck happened?". All the things that captured your heart and soul are still there in the picture, but it does not have the same impact? If this has happened to you, this book will tell you why.
Don't walk, run. Go buy the book!

This is a great tension-relieving book! One of my favorites........1996-06-19
McPherson has a hilarious way of exaggerating those tiny
details that annoy us most. In doing so, he makes them
ludicrous and hilarious. With his wide range of subjects,
there is a cartoons here for everyone of all ages. My
little sister(11) loves them as much as I do. Great for
whenever you have a moment to relax.
