Book Description
The art of monotype has experienced a surge of popularity in recent years, and artists working in other mediums will enjoy exploring the creative potential this process offers them. A brief history of monotype is followed by a comprehensive chapter on materials. The step-by-step instructions are accompanied by some of the finest examples of monotype being done today.
Customer Reviews:
Questions answered.......2007-03-25
This book answered many questions that other artists and I were asking regarding monotype. It gives you permission to proceed in any direction, using any materials you choose.
One for the reference shelf.......2005-09-20
I'm so glad I bought this book. It is one of those I take down regularly. The author thoroughly understands monotype in many mediums. A previous reviewer mentioned how well the toxicity issue was dealt with. Lots of good color illustration.
Great book for monoprinting.......2004-12-29
I agree with the previous reviews - if you're creating monoprints, and particularly if you're looking for non-toxic methods, this is a great book. It's full color with many inspiring illustrations, and full of useful, practical information written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner.
Re. recommended paints: I recently had the pleasure of taking a monoprinting class with Julia Ayres and her daughter Gail Ayres (at the Art Methods & Materials Show in Pasadena, CA, Oct 2004). The Ayres now recommend using the new Akua-Kolor waterbased inks by Rostow & Jung (www.waterbasedinks.com) which I assume were not invented at the time this book was originally printed. The advantage is that these inks are non-toxic, clean up easily, and they stay moist for days. You then print to DRY printmaking paper, and the inks dry instantly once they hit the paper. Now you don't have to worry about the inks drying on the plate, or handling fragile, wet paper. (I shoved my Createx paints in a bottom drawer after the workshop!)
(If you get the opportunity, take a class with the Ayres if you're just getting started, as there's nothing quite like seeing the process in action and the book will make even more sense! They also teach using the PinPress Roller for making monoprints by hand; very useful if you don't have access to an expensive printing press.)
Great demonstation of incredible effects using monotype.......2002-04-29
There seems to be very limited information available on the technique of monotype. This book fills that void by demonstrating the incredible variety of effects possible using the monotype method. There are no projects, per se, rather it teaches techniques that help you create your own masterpieces. Many pieces of example artwork are found throughout the book.
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print made by transferring a painted image to paper. The book starts out with an introduction to materials including plates, mediums, solvents, panting tools and paper as well as hand and press transfer equipment. It also covers studio safety and finding workshop facilities.
Techniques are next including working into a light or dark field and both hand and press transfer.
These include step-by-step instructions accompanied by demonstration photos. Working in specific mediums including watercolor, acrylics, water-soluble writing instruments, monoprint paints (Createx), oil paints, water-based oils and alkyds follows. A section discussing special oil-based printing inks for lithography, etching, printing and serigraphy is also here. There is even a chapter on special techniques including using masks & stencils, embossing and creating collages.
The final chapter gives an overview of monoprints, which combine monotype with other print making processes, and mixed-media monotypes. This includes intaglio, drypoint and engraving, as well as linocut and collagraphic monoprints.
There is a nice list of suppliers as well as interesting biographical notes on the artists featured in the back. This is a great book that displays the great diversity in mediums and results available with monotype.
Great Resource and Guide.......2000-02-07
This book is a valuable resource of methods used in making monotypes. Ms. Ayres reviews every aspect of making a monotype from the tools, the ink or paint, and the process of transferring the image. All the printmaking terms used when describing this art are expertly explained and illustrated. It is clearly not a medium restricted to artists familiar with printmaking. The work of many artists are presented along with the ingenuity they have used to transfer their work. A very valuable resource book both for the artist and those wishing to learn more about this art form.

Book Description
Who says boys are the only ones allowed to have talents and use them? That's what Phoebe Anne Moses, or Annie, as she prefers to be called, would like to know. From the day Annie first picks up her father's rifle at age 8, it's clear she has a rather unusual gift. She is the sharpest shooter in the land. Her Quaker mother would rather Annie concentrate on more traditional activities like cooking and sewing. But Annie can't deny what's in her soul. It's only when she's out in the wilderness, alone with the quiet and the trees and the animals, that she truly feels alive. And Annie knows the game she shoots just may save her family from a life of poverty and despair.
Customer Reviews:
AIMING TRUE TO HERSELF AND HER DREAMS.......2007-08-04
Overcoming gender bias and her mother's stern Quaker attempts to make her act like a lady, young Annie Moses of rural Ohio achieved world recognition for her skills as sharpshooter by the age of 16. Born the 5th of 7 children into a struggling farm family Annie was sent to live at the Country Poorhouse at the age of 7. Jumping from the frying pan into the fire she eagerly accepted the opportunity to be a live-in girl servant (slave) for a vicious couple and their new baby. She acquired moderate schooling and excellent sewing skills, but she was always victimized by bullies. Her greatest secret comfort during these terrible years of trial was her Pa's bag of bullets and the quiet friendship of shy Sally. After suffering several kinds of abuse from the family of Wolves, as she termed them, Annie escaped and gradually made her way back to her real home and mother, whose situation had greatly changed.
But Annie was born to greatness thanks to Pa's beloved rifle and his careful lessons. She treasured and respected his instructions even before he died when she was six. Ma despaired of keeping Annie indoors as a seamstress when the girl longed to roam free in the outdoors, providing the family with both food and money to pay the mortgage, plus other improvements. Even her strict mother realized that it was a sin to deny a God-given talent and Annie, she reluctantly admitted, surely had a Shooting gift. Although she never approved of it, Ma was always grateful for what her gun could provide. Despite the thorny path of her girlhood, Annie learned important lessons abut human nature--and the importance of Gratitude and the need for Forgiveness. A fast-paced, enjoyable read for girls of all ages.
An excellent choice for a read-aloud book!.......2006-01-13
I am a librarian in a small elementary school, and I am reading this book out-loud to a class. They listen with rapt attention and can recall details of the book every week when we get together again. It has appeal for both boys and girls, as Annie has many interesting challenges in her life that lead to her learning how to shoot a gun. This is a must-read book!
Who Says Only Boys Can have Special Talents?.......2002-12-18
I absolutely loved this book. Of course, all books on Annie Oakley have always interested me, but this one stood apart from the rest. The way that the story is told from Annies point of view makes everything make more sense. You understand the emotions Annie feels and it's almost as if you're really connecting with this character. Sheila Solomon Klass did a wonderful job. It's not as if Annie Oakley is trying to become famous or prove the world wrong, it's just that she's trying to feed her poor Quaker family and pay off the mortgage using her talent in Sharpshooting. Touring Worldwide wasn't really part of the plan, but it was certainly the outcome!
Few Fun Facts..................2002-10-08
"Wow!", was my first word when I read this book. I knew that Annie Oakley was poor and that we fathers both died when she was young. But I didn't know that at one point she was sold as a servant! Or had a learning disabilty!
I used this book for a book report, in which you had get a bio. of an inportant womean or a man of the 1800s. Many of them selected Abe Lincoln, Clara Barton, or Laura Ingalls Wilder. But my report was unique in it's own way.
This was a really good book!.......2000-06-09
I think this book was very, very good. The author made Annie'slife so interesting. It was a fun book to read. This book also madeAnnie Oakley become my hero. It proved that boys aren't the best at everything.

Bob Carlos Clarke dead at 55.......2006-04-13
Bob Carlos Clarke was struck by a train and died on March 25th, 2006. The accident took place at the White Hart Lane level-crossing near Barnes in South West London. Clarke is survived by his second wife Lindsey and their daughter Scarlett. Bob is buried at the Brompton Cemetery in London, where several of his most famous photographs from his book "The Dark Summer" were taken. In the Foreword: " In the city they form an oases of silence and seclusion, and their shadowy monuments are full of form and texture. Graveyards exude a strange combination of peace and tension. The mood is unpredictable: they may be threatening in sunlight or tranquil under thunderous sky. Immortalising a split second of beautiful, transitory youth holds a special irony in such a place."

Funny, witty, frank, but also tender.......2005-03-28
As other reviewers have noted, this is so much more than a retrospective collection of the author's photographs. The gorgeous, mostly full-page photos are accompanied by a mixture of autobiographical, anecdotal and advisory writings, which themselves contain many memorable quotations and insights. His descriptions of his working and sexual relationships with his models are entertaining, and, while unapologetically male, never come across as macho or conceited. I was a student in London when Carlos Clarke was exhibiting his work in galleries there, so this book evoked many rich memories of the tragi-comic day-to-day contrasts of London life. Even his photojournalistic subjects reveal an erotic sensitivity: the candid images of lust-crazed English teenagers groping and snogging each other on a filthy floor must surely bring back bittersweet memories for many!
Clarke is a true artist! Find this book!.......2004-02-06
I learned who Bob Carlos Clarke was from a photo magazine last year, but the truth is, I had been aware of him for years. Always a fan of photography, (particularly if it was centered around beautiful women,) I had been a fan of Bob Carlos Clarke without knowing his name but now I had a book to look forward to that showcased the images I remembered him from. It was summer of 2002 when I read about Shooting Sex, an upcoming book of his work, but for months I was unable to find it anywhere. I can't remember whether I special ordered it through a bookstore I was working at or whether I ordered it from Amazon.com in the United Kingdom, but it was a long time before I finally had it in my possession. I am writing this to tell you all that it was well worth the wait at any price.
Shooting Sex, or "The Definitive guide to undressing beautiful strangers, (as it is subtitled), is a bible of an artist's legacy, both personal and professionally. It is page after page (177 gorgeous pages, to be exact), of essays and photographs, memories and musings. Shooting Sex is also one of the most beautiful books in my collection by a man who obviously deserves a great deal more acclaim and credit than he has received.
Shooting Sex has put Bob Carlos Clarke at the top of my list of favorite photographers. He has an eye for glamour and beauty that is refreshingly unique and he portrays it in a way that is not just another fashion image for the sake of being. His images are rich and honest, sexy and alive. Experiencing his work is like sharing the memories of a thousand ghosts. The images are often raw and voyeuristic, but always striking and fantastic. Bob Carlos Clarke's work is what good photography should be. It is pure fantasy. It is capturing dreams and color, movement and shape. When he photographs celebrities, he makes them the legends the public sees them as.
Some of the images are quite racy and risque, but never overtly pornographic or explicit. Bob Carlos Clarke has too much respect for his subjects and it is obvious from the openness give, that the respect is mutual. My favorite set of images begins on page 66 and is of a masked nude woman (Emma), in front of a mirror and in a bathroom setting. The light and tone in these images is unlike anything I have seen before and the book sat open to these pages on my desk for weeks after it arrived because I couldn't bear closing these pages.
As I write this, I am still reading through the wonderfully candid text. Unlike many photo collections, Bob Carlos Clarke includes a full written book to accompany these images, and his stories are as engrossing as the images. If you love photography, you must get this book while you can, at any cost. It doesn't seem to be available in the United States or through amazon.com, which is truly upsetting, but you can buy it through the artist's web site, (along with the gorgeous prints that I too hope to one day own.)
Shooting Sex is not what the title suggests, but rather a journey through the years of one of the most gifted photographers who has ever blessed us with his work. This is one of the finest coffee table books you will ever find, so go find one now!

Customer Reviews:
Well done game........2006-02-19
This game accomplishes a lot; it is not too simle that it has little replay value. The different fleets are, indeed, distinctive. The game does not suffer from rules so complex to make play boring. I can't wait to try out the rules for campaigns, recreating certain eras in the Babylon 5 timeline--there's a good deal of stuff in just the box to keep you playing for a long time.
My first test game found it fairly quick to play. The game really captures the feel of the Babylon 5 genre, while presenting a fast paced game that is still challenging. Though Babylon 5 fans will be happy, anyone seeking a fun sci-fi starship combat game that strikes a good balance in detail and playability won't be disappointed.
