Loved it........2007-08-29
Loved the book. Had beautiful pictures and great display of the French country style.
Strong Five Star Book.......2006-06-30
Charles Faudree's style is "Comfortable French" Anyone could live in his rooms. They have a touch of elegance without being stiff or too formal. They are like that favorite outfit that you have had for years and years and still love to wear. This book is full of great pictures so you can see exactly what he means when he talks about French Country Style.
Fantastic! .......2006-03-13
If you love Country French that is not pretentious, but still elegant, this is the book for you. This is the second of Charles Faudree's design books that I have purchased. The pictures are incredible, and his attention to detail is amazing. He certainly has a gift and I wish that I could afford for him to help me with my house. Especially if that involved traveling with him to the French Market or to the Portobello Market in Notting Hill. Instead, I will use his pictures as a guide. I hope that this book is not his last!
French Country Elegance Defined.......2006-02-25
Mr. Faudree has knocked another one out of the park with his follow-up book to Country French Design. His high style seems to have calmed down somewhat and isn't quite as "over the top" as it was in his first book. I could literally step through the pages and take residence in any of the rooms featured.
If I had a complaint, it would be that the captions didn't maintain much of a narrative regarding the rooms depicted, but basically listed material resources.
C'est Magnifique!.......2006-02-19
He does it again! And I hope he keeps putting out these gorgeous books! Charles Faudree is a true master of his art. Thank goodness the rest of us can see his work published and keep being inspired and moved by his work. I love his philosophy of "it's in the mix, not the match". I don't believe you have to be a Francophile to appreciate and enjoy this book....it is for anyone who enjoys great beauty!
Book Description
Celebrating the distinctive decorative style inspired over many centuries by the French countryside. French Country Living is an invaluable resource for anyone who has ever longed to bring home a piece of France. Combining evocative photographs with elegant and illuminating text by Caroline Clifton-Mogg, the book argues that the familiar romantic landscape is still a vital part of France, and that the roots of most French people lie firmly in the rural way of life. The first part, The Elements, explores the ingredients that make up the whole: the subtle color palette of soft warm grays, cloudy pinks, and misty greens, the traditional materials, the furniture, and the textiles. Then there are the distinctive, often unchanging, objects and accessories, from ceramics to silver to pictures. The second part. The Spaces, looks at the overall style. It begins at the heart of the French home, in the kitchen and dining area -- where wood, stone, and tiles are often combined in imaginative and p

very white.......2007-03-24
If you are afraid of color, this book is for you. Don't let it convince you, though, that french country is not about bold colors- every other book I've seen says the opposite. That said, it is a beatiful book, with lots of rustic elements.
Delicious.......2007-01-25
Caroline Clifton-Mogg's French Country Living is a delicious book to look at; the pages are filled with beautiful, airy rooms and the accompanying text does a good job of explaining how the effect is achieved--lots of grey in the colors, painted furniture, small-sized fabric prints, etc.
This is French country living in the Marie-Antoinette-at-Petit-Trianon style, not truly rural la France profonde, however. The exquisitely restored rooms are filled with priceless antiques, and a cursory glance over the photo credits suggests that the majority of houses shown are located in either Provence, or the richer departements near Paris (the most famous house in Yvelines is Versailles, if that gives you an idea of what's in the neighborhood of some of the chateaux photographed). Having seen more than one room in a rural French house with vinyl wallpaper on the ceiling and door, I can only wish that all of French country life was this beautiful!
Beautiful and informative.......2006-02-03
Actually bought this book French Country Living by Caroline Clifton-Mogg, Christopher Drake (Photographer) as well as New French Country : A Style and Source Book by Linda Dannenberg (Author), Guy Bouchet (Photographer) and this book is really great for those of us who look for more of a French Zen style devoid of lots of tassels and furniture that you are afraid to even sit on.
I especially appreciate the crisp clean photography and amount of white theme rooms and simple room designs. I recommend this book to anyone who loves open, bright and airy homes and rooms, that in my opinion help alleviate or even prevent depression in many people.
And the rooms are so easy to clean and easy to live in. No fear of messing something up. In some ways the book shows what I would call California or casual university town style living that is also environmentally friendly and physically healthy. Also very affordable styles are shown so the book should appeal to all financial groups.
The Essence of the French Culture.......2004-07-27
Outside of Paris and the other bustling cities, France's image is of small farms, atmospheric medieval villages, and of an age well past but well preserved with an understated elegance. Even newly built houses are often designed with a view towards looking like the 19th century.
In this book, hundreds of color photographs illustrate the essence of the French countryside. The book is in two parts, the first emphasizes the soft, non-contrasting colors and the natural materials and textures that are distinctly France. The second part of the book looks at the overall style. It looks at the French home, starting of course with the kitchen (this is after all France). Only then does it move on to the rest of the house, ending with the French garden. And this is France, so the garden also emphasises a place to eat and drink.
This is an absolutely delightful book.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
It has been said that food defines a culture. For the French, food is an integral part of their coveted tradition, and Susan Herrmann Loomis's new book On Rue Tatin embraces both. As a young, recent American college graduate, Loomis left the U.S. for France to attend one of the oldest French cooking schools, La Varenne. Her intent was to immerse herself in French cooking with the aspiration of becoming a food critic. Working as the French equivalent of an apprentice, she quickly became intimate with the ways and traditions that define the French culture, specifically its cuisine. On Rue Tatin ("On Tatin Street") is a descriptive narrative of Loomis's first several years in France, her encounters with the local people, and the bonds she formed, as well as recipes she gathered during her time there.
Following her formal culinary training, Loomis returned to the U.S. and met the man who would become her husband. After the couple's first son turned 2, they moved to France where Loomis was determined to launch her writing career focusing on unique aspects of French farming cuisine. She and her husband eventually purchased an old monastery in Louviers in the Normandy region of France. One of the more humorous and memorable stories she shares concerns the landlord of the small rental that they occupied for a year while her husband remodeled the monastery to livable conditions. During that year, the wife of the landlord believed them to be CIA agents and chose to keep a cold distance from the family. Meanwhile the French police suspected them of dealing drugs.
Every recipe featured throughout this memoir comes with an interesting, anecdotal story, and is very much representative of traditional French cuisine. Gateau au Chocolat de Mamy (or Mamy Jacqueline's Chocolate Cake) is a dense, almost death-by-chocolate confection, but served alone or with a fresh fruit coulis, it will bring a smile, as will the sweet explanation of its origin.
Loomis describes experiences and people with much detail, sometimes several times over, and her prose allows the reader to imagine the tempting smells and vivid colors of the countryside. You may find yourself wishing to see pictures of Loomis's home and the quaint village where she lived, but perhaps that was Loomis's intent--she wants to tempt and challenge you to experience the beauty and foods of Louviers and the Normandy region for yourself. --Teresa Simanton
Book Description
Susan Loomis arrived in Paris twenty years ago with little more than a student loan and the contents of a suitcase to sustain her. But what
began then as an apprenticeship at La Varenne École de Cuisine evolved into a lifelong immersion in French cuisine and culture, culminating in permanent residency in 1994. On Rue Tatin chronicles her journey to an ancient little street in Louviers, one of Normandy’s most picturesque towns.
With lyrical prose and wry candor, Loomis recalls the miraculous restoration that she and her husband performed on the dilapidated convent they chose for their new residence. As its ochre and azure floor tiles emerged, challenges outside the dwelling mounted. From squatters to a surly priest next door, along with a close-knit community wary of outsiders, Loomis tackled the social challenges head-on, through persistent dialogue–and baking.
On Rue Tatin includes delicious recipes that evoke the essence of this region, such as Apple and Thyme Tart, Duck Breast with Cider, and Braised Chicken in White Wine and Mustard. Transporting readers to a world where tradition is cherished, On Rue Tatin provides a touching glimpse of the camaraderie, exquisite food, and simple pleasures of daily life in a truly glorious corner of Normandy.

A French Lifestyle.......2007-09-19
I took a cooking class with Susan when she made one stop in California. I learned alot and so I read this book to see how she ended up in France. It was a delight. It made me want to pack up and visit the town where she lives. I loved reading of the people who live there and the recipes she shares. Very enjoyable.
Interesting story not told very well.......2007-08-22
This is not a cookbook, but a memoir with a scattering of recipes. The story is a familiar one: American becomes enthralled with France (or Italy as is often the case), manages to buy and restore a delapidated country house, and lives to write about it. It is hoped that the proceeds from the sale of the resulting book will defray the costs.
I am sure that Susan Loomis is a nice person, but she is a mediocre writer. Her tale is written in a self-absorbed style that just detracts. The writing is ponderous and irritating.
not about a cooking school.......2006-12-17
Very disappointing, the only good thing in it is the food. It's terribly condescending and author's ego is all over the place. But the most annoying part is that while it claims on the back that this is a book about a cooking school and anyone about to open a small business should read it, this is not the case at all. She only talks about the school a bit at the beginning and then we are just left with her life, her view of the French, which is not very exciting, and an awful lot of adjectives.
Excellent reading.......2006-10-12
Having been a student in France in the 1970s, this book brought back a lot of good memories. Ms. Loomis is an excellent writer and tells a good story making me feel like I was there. I could easily imagine all of the situations and think any person with an interest in France or cooking would enjoy the book. It'll be kept in my library to reread in the future.
France for enthusiasts.......2006-08-31
A pleasant summer read that tells the story of the author's move to the French countryside and establishment of a cooking school. There are several stories: her development as a professional cook, the refurbishment of the historic building that became their home, the family's integration into a small French town. I often wished for more detail--it is not a very long book for so many fascinating topics. She includes an appealing mix of recipes; I marked several as something I want to try.

Kovels' Marks.......2007-03-15
Bought this as a gift for my daughter and she has really enjoyed it's contents. Now she can see if the "Junk and/or Antiques" she has purchased has any real value!!
Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present.......2007-02-11
I haven't been happy with this book since I purchased it. Haven't found one mark from any of the pottery or china I have from this book. Only one or maybe two examples of the companies which made the pottery but not the marks. For example I can't even find the simple "Anchor" from Anchor Hawking Co.(There are plenty of other anchors). I have a very nice Blue "Old Fashion"/juice glass fron A.H. but I have never seen one in blue. Looked it up and could not find MARK in this book. I was very surprised. I've been thinking about purchasing the Second Edition of Kovels' book, but been holding back... Can anyone tell me if it is better or if it's just me, I hope..Mary, techmom@usamedia.tv (No Solicitors Please! Only those wanting to talk about this book please reply. NO SPAMMERS!!)
Good reference book.......2007-02-03
Marks on pottery have always been of interest to me. Some are obvious and well-known and others obscure. Couldn't find all the marks I was looking for. Still a good book to have.
Great reference............2007-01-10
This book has been a great reference for finding pottery marks. This volume does not hold a list of all markings ever used, but it comes closer than any others I have used. My only complaint of this book is that it does not group multiple marks that a particular potter may have used over the years. Instead it groups them by design not by maker.
Still this is the most comprehensive markins book I have found in an affordable price range. Well worth the investment.
Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks : Pottery and Porcelain 1850 to Present (Kovel's Dictionary of Marks).......2006-03-10
Overall it is helpful. I am really just getting into this, so it is great to have something I can refer to to get an idea of where the item I have comes from.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF AEON FLUX
Spy Assassin Seductress
Her instincts: honed for survival. Her psyche: primed for anarchy. Her body: sculpted for action. She's Aeon Flux, a lethal, leather-clad spy who cuts through a brutal swath of subterfuge through Bregna, a hi-tech society controlled by her nemesis, Trevor Goodchild. But Trevor's and Aeon's bond is deeper than that of assassin to tyrant, and the mystery that drives their twisted relationship has remained as impenetrable as Aeon's padlocked chastity belt -- until now.
THE HERODOTUS FILE
This explosive file of classified intelligence reveals Trevor Goodchild's chilling plan to consolidate power by erasing history -- and the hiring of mercenary agent, Aeon Flux, to transform his plan into an Orwellian reality. Crammed with transcripts, surveillance, and memos, the file explores the dark corridors of Aeon's mysterious life, bringing into question her ultimate allegiance. Is Aeon truly loyal to Trevor's vision of Bregna? Or is she stealthily subverting his plot from the inside out? This stunning file tells a story of intrigue and treachery, of domination and submission, of love and hate so perverse, it could only spring from the otherworld of Aeon Flux.
The television series, Aeon Flux, is a Colossal Pictures Production in association with MTV Networks.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect companion piece to the greatest series ever animated..........2007-03-16
Aside from presenting a more detailed view of life in the fueding nation-states Monica/Bregna, and providing additional insight into the complicated relationship between Aeon Flux and Trevor Goodchild, this book will teach you how to write effective inter-office emails and the dire importance of injecting creativity into professional presentations.
A better $2.50 you will never spend...
Good book, bad movie.......2007-01-09
It's unfortunate that the cover art was redone by MTV as a movie tie-in because this book has nothing to do with the movie of the same name. No offense to Charlize Theron, but the original Aeon is the topic of this book. As an insane Peter Chung fan, I had to have it but anyone interested in material resulting from this movie should probably pick up the recent Aeon Flux graphic novel instead if they liked the movie.
A good tie in to the animated series.......2005-10-15
In a weird way, this book actually made the Æon/Trevor Love-Hate relationship make more sense. While the animated series did present that Bregna and Monica were quite obviously once one, this book filled in the plot hole of what happened. Learning more of Æon's specifications was nice, though I could have done without some of the specification information on her victims. Oddly, this book makes the muddled AF time line actually make some sense. Especially if the episode regarding President Clavius immediately follows the Herodotus File.
Imagination in Overdrive.......2005-09-02
Graphic novel based on the MTV series. Intriguing pictural novel with incredible imagination. Graphics terrific, and plot good until the end, which seemed too abrupt. Always sexual undertones. Fascinating page turner, as almost every page is different in format. Supposed to read as if it were a file. The idea of rewriting history to suit the victor is certainly not a new one. The Civil War is perhaps one such example. The futuristic technology envisioned here is as good as the graphics that depict it. I came upon this cold, read it in 24 hours. Enjoyed it immensely.
Precious.......2002-11-12
There is never enough Aeon. Ever. I have the pvc statue, the 3 vhs set and the DVD. I've dressed as her for halloween 2 times and probably will again some day with improvied outfits. This is a must for any Flux fan, lots of cool pictures, it's a case file on her and gives a little insight into the story, but not too much.
