Book Description
Here is an exotic interior-design book for anyone who has ever dreamed of escaping to a different way of life. The elegant lifestyle, magnificent homes, and varied furniture and decor of the French, Dutch, Spanish, English, and Danish islands of the Caribbean from the late 18th century to the early 20th century are revealed as never before in this sumptuous volume.
With some of the most beautiful tropical islands on earth as a backdrop, dazzling photographs reveal the homes of the sugar barons who made their fortunes there. Tables and beds from St. Thomas and Ste. Croix, armoires and chairs from Martinique, cupboards and chests from the Spanish Antilles, settees and cabinets from the English islands; all are works that combine the grace and opulence of European and North American styles with the vernacular island forms and decorative motifs. These gorgeous examples give the reader a unique view of the casual refinement of aristocratic Caribbean living.
Customer Reviews:
Glad to Have This Book.......2007-04-28
Not so long ago I saw Caribbean Elegance at a friend's house. My friend was gracious enough to lend it to me to read. After reading it, I felt I should have my own copy, so I ordered a copy from amazon.com.
Not only is Dr. Connors' narrative comprehensively informative and enjoyable, but Bruce Buck's photographs are absolutely beautiful.
Together they have introduced me to a heretofore, to me at least, world of fascinating furniture and decorative arts. Kudos to Dr. Connors and Mr. Buck.
I look forward to acquiring the rest of their work.
Furniture is the Focus.......2006-01-25
This book has great pictures of West Indian furniture and its focus is only on the furniture. I was looking for some ideas on how to design using this style, but not much can be gotten directly on how to do this from this book. However, I did come away with a good sense of the various influences on the West Indian style.
Moderately interesting.......2005-08-15
This book had some interesting facts, but as an interior designer who was looking for inspirational pictures for room designs I thought it had moderate value.
FABULOUS!.......2005-04-10
I have owned this book for over a year and always thought it was an excellent book but wasn't inspired to write a review until just recently, when I received a new book I purchased called "Caribbean Style". This book, "Caribbean Elegance", is everything that the other book is not. I love this book! The photography is incredible, encompasing everything from the smallest furniture detail or accessory, to entire historical exteriors & interiors, and exquisite scenery!
The text gives a detailed history of the settlers and islands, really giving you an understanding of how the various styles of West Indies architecture and furnishings came into being. It also distingushes the furnishings by their various European influences, such as Spanish, English or Dutch, among others. As an interior designer I found this book fascinating and educational. But even for someone who just has a love of the islands, the photography alone is worth the price of the book.
Caribbean Elegance.......2004-06-17
This book was exactly what I was searching for. Not only is it visually stunning, but it provides a wealth of historical information on Caribbean style and furnishing. A wonderful resource if you want to understand how this very unique style of interior design came to be.

Customer Reviews:
Great BOOK !!!.......2007-04-29
If you want to know more about architecture in the Caribbean, you have to read this book!
Caribbean Elegance.......2007-04-11
Through his work at la Marina, Casa de Campo, Gian Franco Fini captures the essence of refined architecture with a perfect air of Caribbean elegance.
A place to visit before you dies........2007-04-10
This is a book about one of those magical places that once you get there you don't want to leave. It's in the path of boats coming from Miami to the West Indies and is the place to see in the Caribbean before you die. Casa de Campo is the Caribbean most complete resort by far where any possible hobby in the world could practiced at world renowned conditions -besides skiing, except if you change it for water-sky-. The book about the Casa de Campo's Marina is definitely a 5 start in class, quality and content. This is the real thing in Caribbean Elegance and Luxury where you'll be able to find some of the most exclusive houses in the region.
The Best Keep Secret in the Caribbean unveils........2007-03-02
This is the only book available about Marinas from an architectural standpoint. Blueprints, sketches and more than 300 full-color pictures are a never ending source for one of the most luxurious approach to Caribbean Architecture. It's about the renowned Marina at Casa de Campo, La Romana, Dominican Republic and is a must for anyone willing see from the inside out as many options as possible to recreate a tropical paradise despite if it's and apartment or a houses under 2,000 sqf or a masterpiece above 20,000 sqf.
In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

The greatest intoduction to CARTOONING ever written.......2006-12-14
"Cartooning the Head & Figure" --by Jack Hamm
Artist and Christian minister Jack Hamm passed from this world at the age of 81. He illustrated the notable cartoon strip characters "BUGS BUNNY" and "ALLEY OOP" early in his career as an artist. He wrote and illustrated over 25 books on drawing. He pioneered an early TV show on drawing instruction in the Dallas/Houston Texas area.
I admit I am not an expert on fine art, but after reviewing many books which teach beginners HOW-TO-DRAW, it is my sincere opinion that Jack Hamm is the finest instructor America ever produced. Hamm almost never composed text, or used wordy explanations about drawing something. Hamm drew you a picture or series of pictures and showed how it might be done. He did not do this ..."sometimes" in his books. Hamm did this ALL THE TIME, whether it was cartoon figures, seascapes, landscapes, or drawing the human figure.
That is why any effort to list all the contents of his book, "CARTOONING THE HEAD & FIGURE" staggers the human imagination. I might be sitting at the computer for several hours, just listing the contents. Hamm shows how to draw every possible human emotion. Pages 22 & 23 alone are specific instructions in how to draw particular parts of the face to yield a human feeling.
The amazing thing is, Hamm is offering a book not only that adults can use; rather, Hamm is offering a book that CHILDREN can use. This book is in a class by itself, just as is Hamm's classic on drawing the human figure. Hamm's books are one of the richest treasures ever produced on American soil.
Effective and Enjoyable.......2006-11-05
We learn to draw for several reasons. Animation, 3D modeling, illustration, painting, draw cartoons, write comics books..or just for the fun of it..and we stumble into cartooning sooner or later.
In order to use something, first of all we need trust, and we should try honestly. couple of years back after buying this book, and after spending some time trying to copy some of the drawings, I put it aside saying this is for some non serious people. I went on to learn from Kimon Nicholaides, Glenn Vilppu, Loomis and the lot.. true life drawing though challenging can be rewarding. It was a difficult path, consumed lot of time, but grew my confindence.
The key is confidence. getting rid of that shakiness, the doubt about the "correctness" and so on..and quite frankly practice is the only tool that will build us confidence.
Kimon's book taught that. just boldly and confidently scribble your way to learn drawing. mistakes after mistakes takes us closer to where we want to go,and one fine day we would have shaken off all that doubt and our pencils will start drawing what we want them to.
Glenn Vilppu is another master teacher, his DVDs and his Drawing manual are Gems! you can spend that money just to learn how to hold that pencil properly..seriously.
Recently I dusted out 'Cartooning the Head and Figure' from my closet, and boy! I found a treasure. this book is so densely made, it needs some real overall plan of approach to make good use of it. Plenty of step by step approaches to achieve individual results are presented.
It has all that you ever need to create your cartoons. and so simply and clearly made.
We just need to spend time at each step. practise.practise.practise..and one can very quickly gain confidence in cartooning. When Jack presents us a 100 different noses, we need to *use* them on our own figure.. when he presents us countless numer of expressions, we need to *build* them on our own figure.
The large collection of different artifacts needed .. heads, eyes, brows, eyeglasses, noses, mouth, moustaches, hats, hairstyles, expressions, heads,hands,feets,bodytypes,dresses.. Wow!! It is truley encyclopedic in some sense. We just need to *use* them properly to learn it all.
I would suggest that we should prepare our own sets of exercises based on our interests, maybe develop a set of characters, first just the face and then apply all these to them, example, create a character..with specific headtype, eyes, nose mustache etc.. and then apply those endless expressions on them.. amazing, how effective and enjoyable this book becomes.
The key is to study the drawings to seek the differences in styles, expressions and to effectively apply them. There is no copying..only analysing and re constructing..
Nowadays I keep this book at my bedside, and before going to sleep, draw a few based on this book. so much fun!
Great book.......2004-09-17
Learning to cartoon and draw caricatures can be a daunting task, but the late Jack Hamm makes it all come together. From dozens and dozens of facial expressions and basic anatomy, animation and advertising, even political and editorial cartoons, the artist takes you step by step the world of drawing "funny pictures". Regardless of style or genre there is plenty to learn here.
Excellent!.......2004-09-08
I own most of Mr. Hamm's books now and all of them are excellent.
Some caution though for comic book artists wannabes, this book
doesn't teach you action oriented cartoons. Get "Action!
Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell instead.
However, Mr. Hamm's book is a classic because it's not just a
how-to book but rather a book founded on good art principles
considering Mr. Hamm isn't just a "cartoonist" but a true
artist.
Get this book! You won't be disappointed.
A must for people learning illustration.......2004-05-04
I think I've read this book more than 100 times. It is one of my favorite references for illustrating the human figure.

Book Description
From sepia-toned shots of old Hawaii to sharp focused close-ups of Kelly Slater, Surf Life juxtaposes, pastes, and cuts together a scrapbook of the surfer lifestyle throughout the 20th century. But as even the greatest surfer riding the biggest waves leaves nothing permanent in his or her wake, Surf Life provides much more than one man's stroll down an always sunny, taned, water flooded memory lane. Surf Life captures the fleeting, ephemeral moments that together add up to a visual history of surfing: pre-WWII and post-Gulf War beach boys, winsome surfer girls on long boards, Hawaiian aunties in parasols, and lone surfers on empty beaches. Prize-winning men and women ride waves taller than most of us have ever even seen, including 60s champ Joey Cabell and 90s star Kelly Slater, Kauai waterman Titus Kinimaka and four-time world champion Lisa Andersen, the late rebel Miki Dora and Hawaiian stylist Paul Strauch. Photographs from the last 70 years of surfers in the waves, on the beach, riding around in cars, and just lounging around are shot by the likes of Ron Stoner, Don King, Frank Quirarte, Jeff Hornbaker, Art Brewer, Jeff Devine, Jim Russi, LeRoy Grannis, Dewey Nicks, Don James, Carlos Serrao, Hank, Doc Ball, Aaron Chang, Mark Oblow, Craig Stecyk, Ted Granbeau, David Tsay, Steve Bissel, Dan Merkel, Leo Hetzel, Taki, Eric Aeder, Harold Ward, Eric Baseman, John Severson, Andrew Kidman, and Audrey Adler. From California to Hawaii, Tahiti to Indonesia, Australia to the Maldives, Surf Life follows the endless summer of the surfer's life.

Coastal hot pot........2007-02-28
A richly edited compilation of surfers and coastal dwellers.
Busy and lively with images from early Hawaiian and Californian eras to the worldwide surfing scene of the present day .
Abstractly put together ,it's a lovely mish mash of surfing's highly visual imagery.
I really enjoy this book and go back to browse through it often.
It complements the other books put out by Tom Adler.

Slowly Builds the Zany Grandparent Theme, Concluding with a Hug!.......2007-02-21
Somewhere between a board book (in its simplicity) and a picture book, "Here Comes Grandma" shakes itself out of predictability just in time. Other than the illustrations--Grandma looks like she came out of a Dutch fairy tale with her clog-like shoes and brightly patterned attire, the first few pages seem fairly ordinary. A youngster(also wearing Dutch or, at least, traditional Scandinavian clothes) receives a letter from Grandma, saying "I'm coming to see you." The story is told in first-person, as if the child is reading Grandma's letter. (I'm not using pronouns on purpose--it's difficult to tell if it's a boy or a girl.)
We then see Grandma and her dog walking "a long way to see you." The next several pages show her looking silly when riding a bicycle, resourceful when riding a horse, and fun-loving in her roadster. This "older person acting wild and crazy" theme is a little tired, and while the repetition of "to see you" on each page breeds familiarity, it also borders on the very ordinary.
However, just when you think you know what's coming, Janet Lord kicks things up a few notches. There's Grandma waving at you from atop a train, looking very much the "hobo." There's Grandma in profile, looking more than a little like Santa, skiing down a slope, her dog riding a sled atop the luggage! Next, Grandma floats amid the bluebirds and apple trees in a big baloon, the dog's ears just barely poking above the basket. It just gets better and better. Grandma shows up in a one-piece with giant flippers, leaving a sub and an octopus behind her:
"I'll race a submarine
and glide through the ocean to see you"
She even flies her own bright orange colored plane, wearing goggles (even the dog wears them!) Near the conclusion, we see a mural-like presentation of all the things Grandma did to see her grandchild, and the cute, old-fashioned illustration feels happy and light. The best is saved for last, because Grandma has planned her arrival:
"...We'll whirl and twirl,
and laugh and sing,
and I'll give you a
great
big
hug."
Grandma Visits Bella.......2006-03-03
Two year old Bella LOVES this book ... and as a long distance grandma, I really liked it too!!!!
A grandmother's love.......2006-02-03
Every page of this book exudes the love of a grandmother for her grandchild. On each 2-page spread, a plump, old-fashioned grandmother takes a bike, skis, car, etc. to visit the child. The pictures are amusing for an adult even after many readings (I especially like the woman in her rubber bathing cap and polka-dot swimsuit) and they are also filled with small details that keep a child's attention. The words have a wonderful pattern that is characteristic of classics. And the ending is perfect, a big bearhug when the grandmother arrives. A fantastic book!
Wonderful Read Aloud Book!.......2005-09-16
I think that this is a wonderful book for very young children.
The bright and colorful illustrations are simple, yet
offer plenty of images for children to notice and learn from.
The text is comforting and conveys a loving message for little
ones. I look forward to reading it to my future grandchildren!
very cute.......2005-08-23
This is all about a grandma who is ready to see her grandchild. The grandmother will do anything to get to the grandchild. She rides a bike, a hot air balloon, a submarine and lots more mode of transportation.
The book is small in size making is easy for little hands to hold.
My 2 year old daughter loved this book. She "read" it to us after we read it to her once. She liked seeing the grandma and her dog.
