Good Service.......2007-09-17
Book was shipped and delivered in a timely manner, and in promised condition. I would order from them again.
Excellent book, but missing a component........2007-08-21
I really enjoy this book; it has a fantastic overview of how buildings are put together from foundation to the roof. It also discusses concerns such as loads, soil types, and a host of other details involved in the construction of buildings. It also has considerations to things I never would have thought of such as path widths for people to walk down in ones or twos. To be perfectly clear, this is not an in-depth book. It covers a lot of material in brief with tons of illustrations. It almost looks like a textbook for a building or architectural trade course (I'm not a student). The reason for only 4 stars: I'd probably have given it another star but for a an exception: The book covers rammed earth and adobe construction (relatively obscure and uncommon to modern construction methods) but fails to cover insulated concrete forms (ICF) or structural insulated panels (SIP). This is an omission that needs to be corercted.
Building Construction Illutrated.......2007-07-05
This book is a condensed version of the Architectural Graphics Stadards at a greatly reduced price. The book provides all the basic information needed for the design and construction of basic buildings in easy to read illustrations and dialog. As a professional architect, I often used this book to research basic information for my designs. An excellent book for anyone thinking about building their own home. Even if a contractor will be hired, it would provide the basic information needed to verify quality construction is being provided.
extremely informative.......2007-06-27
While taking my second drafting class, I used this book as a helpful guide. Ching's (one of the author) footprints are throughout the book. If you have any of Ching's other books, this one will fit right in. The method in which he uses to illustrate his points will be helpful.
An ARCHITECTURE STUDENT must own..........2007-06-27
I went through Architecture school and have been in practice for 4 years now. This is a fantastic book to have in school. This book provides you with great beginner information on how simple buildings ACTUALLY go together. It's not detailed to the "n-th" degree but it doesn't need to. It's great for any architecture student. This book contains a lot of what you are not going to be taught (unfortunately- not enough time) in 4-6 years of Architecture school. The illustrations are easy to read and it provides enough axons to portray its ideas well. Reading/looking through this book in school will make going into practice & construction documents, that much easier.

Book Description
Because public art suffers from falling between the realms of art and urban planning, it has been neglected in debates both on contemporary art and the future of cities. Art, Space and the City focuses on two roles for art: as decoration within revisioned urban design and as a social process of criticism.
Malcolm Miles applies a range of critical perspectives which have emerged from art criticism, urban design, urban sociology, geography and critical theory--to examine the practice of art for urban public spaces, and asks the artworld how it might contribute to the urban future. Drawing on a wealth of images and examples, including New York, Seattle, London and Tokyo, the author questions the effectiveness of public art in achieving more convivial urban environments, while retaining the idea that imagining the urban future is as much part of a democratic society as using public space.
Exploring the diversity of the roles of professionals and users in the construction of the city, the gendering of space and the ways in which space and citizen are represented, Miles explains how these issues are as relevant to architecture, urban design and planning as they are to public art. After three decades of public art as an often marginalized area within the practice of art, this is the only book to take stock of what it has become and what the future holds for it in the urban setting.

Osa Johnson's travel adventures and explorations come across as vibrantly today as they did when they were written in 1940. They're richer now with the added perspective of history, and the added wealth of Martin Johnson's photographs of charging elephants, reposing lions, and head hunters roasting heads, marshmallow-like, over a campfire. The life the Johnsons led was nothing like the life Osa expected. From 1917 to 1937 she and Martin were visiting and filming cannibals in the New Hebrides, orangutans in Borneo, and the rich gamut of wildlife available on safari in Kenya and the Congo. Osa led a life the likes of which won't be seen again, and she tells a good story, too.
Book Description
A CLASSIC MEMOIR OF TWO PIONEERING ADVENTURERS
Before Joy Adamson went to Africa, before Margaret Mead sailed to Samoa, before Dian Fossey was even born, a Kansas teenager
named Osa Leighty married Martin Johnson, a pioneering photographer just back from a 'round-the-world cruise with Jack London. Together the Johnsons flew and sailed to Borneo, to Kenya, and to the Congo, filming Simba and other popular nature movies with Martin behind the camera and Osa holding her
rifle at the ready in case the scene's big game star should turn hostile. This bestselling memoir retraces their careers in rich detail, with precisely observed descriptions and often heart-stopping anecdotes. Illustrated with scores of the dramatic photos that made the Johnsons famous, it's a book
sure to delight every lover of true adventure.

I Married Adventure.......2007-06-09
I loved this book! The author creates visual images that will have your palms sweating as you read about encounters with head hunters. This book inspired me to do more research about Osa Johnson. It was also enjoyed by members of my book club.
Searching for the Grandparents of King Kong.......2006-02-25
My interest in and use of Osa's book are fairly narrow, but I enjoyed her retelling of her life with Martin. They were truly remarkable people, who lived up to her title.

Incredible Story.......2006-01-14
This book is a biography of Martin Johnson, written as a loving memorial by his wife shortly after his death in a plane crash. Martin, born in 1884, led a fascinating life. From Osa's descriptions of his school years, it sounds like if Martin had been an adolescent today, he might have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. He was obviously a very intelligent youth, but had no patience for sitting at a desk and studying topics that weren't of direct interest to him. He was quite taken with photography however, and established himself as a professional photographer while still in high school. He also had a lifelong love of travel, and he managed to spend several years in France while his peers were off in college or getting started in their careers. A lucky break with Jack London got Martin's career going. London hired Johnson as a cook for his ill-fated around-the-world sailing expedition. It was the photos that Johnson brought back from this trip that were to provide the original seed money for all the travels and photographic projects that were to occupy him the rest of his life.
Osa's story of meeting Johnson is incredibly wild. Before she knew it, she had eloped with this young man, and found herself at the tender age of 16 trying to see his dreams of travel adventure come true. Osa was considerably younger than Martin, and it was perhaps her youth that made their partnership work. Osa was still quite unexperienced when she began traveling with Martin, and was foolhardy in the face of danger, which any person would have to be in order to keep up with him and his crazy notions. Her youth probably also gave her the physical conditioning and stamina needed to run up mountains and away from cannibals. It's amazing to read of their adventures today, especially given their time in history, starting well before World War I.
Osa left school at 16 when she married Martin, but she nevertheless became a skilled writer. She was very much a product of her times, however, when it came to her attitudes towards non-Anglo-Saxon peoples. She seemed to look upon members of "primitive" races to be so far beneath her as to be just as appropriate as animals as subjects for their photographic studies. As for animals, although she repeated endlessly their desire to go on safari in order to photograph, not shoot animals, she blithely reports shooting a variety of game, both big and small during their African travels. As she tells it, she and Martin would set up the cameras and provoke animals to charge to they could capture the charges on film. If an animal came too close, however, they would of course have to "bring it down", be it a rhino, elephant, or lion. And they couldn't escape the responsibility of providing fresh meat for their native porters, so of course she had to develop her hunting skills and shot many a Thompson's gazelle along the trail. If you can set aside such flaws and stomach-turning gaffes, the book can be an amazing account of the lives of perhaps the most adventurous couple of recent times.
Unforgettable.......2005-11-06
A friend gave me this book almost 30 years ago, and I find that I read it every year or so.... it's inspirational and life-affirming. Every time I read it, I find myself wondering if it could really be true. It is a lovey, readable tale of two young mid-western Americans who find each other, and head out to explore the world. The love story is just as compelling as the adventure story. I find that I reach for this book at times in my life when I need to find an escape into a larger world... one full of faith and hope and openess to what's around the next corner....
The Best TRUE Adventure I've Ever Read.......2004-01-31
I first read "I Married Adventure" when I took this book out of my local library as a student. It fascinated me. I was pleasantly surprised when I found it to still be available.
Martin and Osa Johnson lived what they wrote. There is no pretense in their lives. They were true adventurers. They made a great contribution to the world of adventure. I'm sure they inspired many to further their boundaries.
This is an adventure that will cause you to hold your breath while reading, wondering how they got through.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to live outside their border. It's breathtaking!

An Inspiration for a Young Girl.......2006-10-15
I remember our teacher in the fourth grade reading this book to us, chapter by exciting chapter, each one leaving us on the edge or our seats, quite literally. I thought Osa Johnson was wonderful. I had no idea that women could be like her and do the amazing things she did. I was certain that I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. You see, when I was in the fourth grade it was only 1949 and women still didn't do the things Osa did. As it turns out, I didn't either, but it didn't stop me from dreaming.
I read the book to my own children, chapter by chapter and they were just as spellbound as my 4th grade classroom had been. They couldn't wait for bedtime each night so they could hear the next chapter. I couldn't wait either...it was as if I were a child again, right along with them.
I'm buying the book for my grandsons now. They are 6 and 11 and I don't think it's a minute too soon for them to be caught up in the story of these adventurers.
I Married Adventure review.......2003-12-30
Though I am biased, since Osa Johnson was my grandfather's aunt, I have read this book a couple of times and have always found it to be well-written and easy to relate to. Osa was a woman ahead of her time, driving a truck, hunting fowl for dinner, and planting a garden with the help of hired African men, only to see it trampled by elephants. This story really gives a clear picture of what it was like to be one of very few American women traveling in undeveloped parts of the world in the 1920s and 30s.
