Photos.......2007-05-07
As with everything else from this author, it is just a collection of pretty pictures, with absolutely no detail on materials and construction techniques. There is a reason his books are so cheap.
good, but not great.......2006-06-27
This book shows some nice homes but, the point of the book is not based on design but on square footage. So if your looking for a book based on design only, u might try another book
Great material!.......2006-02-02
Book had alot of cool homes, most seemed like vacation/guest houses though. Only problem I have with the book is the binding wasn't terribly strong. After lying it out and people looking thru it a few times the spine is broken.
Small thing, good content
Nice houses! nice pictures but very little technical info.......2005-08-16
The houses presented in this book are great but I would not define them as small! Indeed this is a joke: in my opinion, a 2500 sq.ft. one-bedroom house is huge. Only a few of them are real family homes that one can live in.
The presentation and format is great but more technical info (besides floorplans which are great) would be appreciated.
In short, a beautiful book which requires some housework to get useful ideas out of it.
Overall, A good book for the layperson........2005-04-12
25 Houses is an overall good book for the layperson. It's successful in showing that well-designed custom homes don't always have to be enormous. However, it lacks in depth for those who are looking for "how it was done". This book would really shine if there was information about materials used, custom details or the inspiration behind the designs.
Also, there are a few examples of ordinary houses that, in my opinion, shouldn't be in this publication.

Human culture is unthinkable without myth: myths are deeply rooted in the brain's power to structure the world by devising stories and representing them in images. Each culture has its own mythological answers to the questions `How did the world come into being?' and `How do the customs and rituals of my people relate to that world and to the divine forces driving it?' Each culture translates these answers into its own distinctive imagery. The Picture Atlas of World Mythology is an extensive survey of depictions of the gods and their vicissitudes of the various pantheons, of religious symbols, images and objects taken from cultures from all over the world.

As invaluable to mythology as the OED is to English studies........1996-12-31
This set of books classify all known myths and folk tales,
in terms of both story and motif. Invariably, any book
analyzing myths will simply use Thompson's notation (Aa ###)
whenever placing the myths discussed in a multi-cultural or
syncretic context. For an understanding of Thompson's work
rather than referencing the literally encyclopedic result,
see _Types_of_the_Folktale_.

Book Description
Steve Horn first visited the Balkans in 1970. In 2003 he returned, retracing his tracks, revisiting the villages and towns of his previous trip and tracking down the people who he had met 30 years earlier. A poignant story, including several personal contributions from those he met during his travels.
Steve Horn studied with Paul Caponigro. His photographs are in many collections, including those of Yale University, Seattle Arts Commission, and Travnik Natural History Museum in Bosnia.
Customer Reviews:
The Human Face of Tragedy.......2006-01-28
Visiting Bosnia as a young photographer more than thirty years ago, Steve Horn was charmed by the congenial Bosnians, their beautiful landscape, and their cultural heritage. When the Balkan War broke out in 1992, he could hardly believe the reports of unbridled cruelty and destruction in that same country. More than thirty years afterward, Horn returned to the Balkans to photograph the aftermath of war and listen to the stories of the survivors. Especially touching are his interviews with some of the same people he photographed as children in a time of peace. Essays set the context for the eloquent black and white photographs.
An Artist's Connection across Borders - Recommended.......2005-12-02
The cliché of course is that the photographer is the ultimate thief of souls, but in the case of PICTURES WITHOUT BORDERS, Steven Horn turns that cliché on its head. In 1970, Horn traveled to Yugoslavia the way any college student in his right mind would travel - in a VW Bus with a darkroom set up in the back. After taking hundreds of photographs of the country's landscape, architecture and people - especially children - he returned to the States to resume his studies.
Thirty years later, with those same photographs in his pack, Horn returned to Bosnia to reconnect with the faces and places he'd photographed. With local guides and some luck, he found many of the same "children" that populated his prints, and his reunion with them - and their children! - forms the heart of this book. But this is not just a work of nostalgia; this is a book of war as well, for in the intervening years the Balkans War of the 1990s ravaged the region. "So all those children who were in the picture a long time ago," one man tells Steve, "every one of them faced ordeals in the war...and each has their story about the war time and it is not a favorable story."
Not only did Horn bring his 1970 photographs back to the children he could track down (in many cases, his photos were the only childhood images they now possess), he also delivered dozens of his prints of buildings that were destroyed in the war to the Natural History Museum in Travnik, Bosnia - many of which are now the only pre-war photographs of their respective buildings in existence.
While there are many stirring images throughout the book, the standout is the cover photograph (the Amazon reproduction here does not do it justice). It's a great example of both Horn's eye as well as the aesthetic power of photography. Is the image that of a Serb or Muslim cemetery? (A life and death question for many, and the answer could reveal Horn's political intent.) Does the photograph show headstones growing into the city, or does it document the city's neighborhoods growing into the cemetery? In other words, is the city dying, or is it finally conquering death? Smartly, Horn titled the photograph simply "Sarajevo," leaving any interpretation for us.
While one might have hoped for a more consistent and seamless integration of the text in the book with the images, and perhaps more circumstantial background for some of the 1970 photographs, PICTURES WITHOUT BORDERS testifies to the tremendous impact an artist can have on a community and its people.

Customer Reviews:
More fun comix.......2007-09-24
Love this book! I love Matt Groening's Life In Hell series. So true, so funny!
A pint-sized edition of a great book.......2007-09-20
Binky's Guide to Love is another great Life in Hell collection. This edition, though, is printed in a smaller format than the other books. It's about 6 inches square, as opposed to the usual 11 inch square books. It's still a little larger than the size it's run in papers, but it can still induce eye strain.
But the content is all there, and just as funny as ever. So, four-star material, dinged a point for size.
Uplifting!.......1999-03-18
Who would have known such a strange looking rabbit charachter could be such a scholar when it comes to love! I was thouroughly impressed with Groening's portrayal of young single folk on the dating scene, and Akbar and Jeff can tell a lot about a lengthy relationship without involving gender roles. I might add that I also enjoy some of the appearances of Groening's sons, Will and Abe, for the realism they add to the humor.
Guaranteed therapy after a failed relationship........1998-12-03
I bought this book, and was really impressed by Binky's guide to 'love'. It is extremely amusing and insightful. Full of witty bitterness. It has a dig at dating, love and the whole relationship thing. I thought it was great. Recommended reading when your feeling really cynical and self pitying. I constantly flip through the first half of the book that relates to Binkys adventures in the dating game, but i don't really find the second half of the book, Jeff and Ackbar, as humourous. I guess the gay humour isn't as relative.
Binky's Less Bitter, and he'll show you how........1997-11-12
This indeed is a sort-of-sequel to "Love is Hell," and unlike "Love is Hell," this is substantially less bitter. Groening drew this after he met his "radiant" wife, and it definately shows. Less bitterness kind of spoils it a little, but there's still quite a few good laughs. Akbar and Jeff make a rather lengthy appearance here as well.
