5 out of 5 stars Another keeper for those who are obsessed..........2006-01-14

As I am!

"117 House Designs of The Twenties" is a reprint of the 1923 Gordon Van Tine catalog. There are a few errors in the introduction (such as the statement that Sears started selling kit homes in 1909; it was 1908) and some other frustrating mis-information, but that's a minor point.

For those sick puppies (such as myself) who like to sit and read old catalogs for hours and hours, this book is a gem. There's lots of reading material in the front and back, giving good detail about the company and how they did business.

Gordon Van Tine was a worthy contender in the kit home business, selling roughly 50,000+ kit homes in their four decades in the housing business. (Thanks to Dale Wolicki for the stats.)

Plus (and this is a biggie) GVT was the front man for Montgomery Ward homes. Unlike Sears, Montgomery Ward did not have their own mills, architects and catalogs but turned to Gordon Van Tine to supply their kit homes.

So, if you suspect you have a Montgomery Ward home, you'll want to peruse this GVT catalog.

5 out of 5 stars A superb resource in architectural history.......2001-01-26

"117 House Designs of the Twenties" is a reprint of the 1923 mail-order house catalogue of the Gordon-Van Tine Company. This crisp reproduction is thus an accurate window into this era in United States home architecture. The wealth of detailed artistic renderings also make this a book of great charm and beauty.

Based in Davenport, Iowa, Gordon-Van Tine was a trailblazer in the field of prefabricated houses. This catalogue covers the company's products in amazing detail. We see cutaway views of homes that reveal the construction technique. We also see plumbing fixtures, lights, and cutaway views of furnaces.

But the heart of this catalogue lies in the detailed floor plans, as well as in the detailed artists' renditions of both exteriors and interiors. This catalogue contains structures ranging in size from a humble one-room vacation cottage to roomy nine-room farmhouses. Both one- and two-story houses appear. The main styles represented are bungalow and colonial revival (the latter including "Dutch colonial" designs), in many different configurations.

The exterior drawings capture many features: columned porches, sun porches, various roof types (gabled, hipped, gambrel), dormers, exposed rafter tails, and more. Equally detailed and charming are the depictions of furnished interiors. This is truly a marvelous book.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining look at 1920s houses.......2000-04-17

I was looking for some reference material for houses built in the 1920s, particularly pictures of various rooms, so that I can restore some rooms in a 20s house to original condition. This book not only has exterior pictures of many different houses, but also lists things like color schemes and construction methods. It also shows pictures of garages, doors, and even manufacturing methods for the houses. The pictures may be in black and white, but they're valuable references. ... this book is an absolute steal.

1 out of 5 stars total waste of money!!!.......2007-04-07

this book was not helpful at all!!!i had just recently got into manga and anime drawing so i thought that this book would be helpful to me you know with the title being "basics for beginners" and all. all it did was show me useless information.all it does is show you characters made out of these weird rectangle type things only and then the finished project (but thats all no hair no clothes no nothing), instead of step-by-step directions on everything. if you are a beginner i would highly reccomend NOT, i repeat NOT getting this book!!! it confused me and didn't actually show me how to draw anything!!!if your a beginner and don't know where to start, your not alone!!! although this is the first book i ever got on the whole anime subject i would suggest some other how to draw manga books but definately not this one. try how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons volumes 1-6 and more how to draw manga volumes 1-4. believe me if you want, if you think diferently and want to try it any way be my guest but in my oppinion it's a total waste of money!!! hope this helped!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2007-01-10

Bought it as a Christmas gift for one of my nieces. I looked through it before I gave it to her. The book looks like it's got alot to offer. Maybe I'll get one for myself in the future.

1 out of 5 stars tasteless.......2006-06-28

This book tasteless. There are comics in the back of the book where there is a pedophilia scene. A young boy is seduced by a older man. It's not very nice. It also shows how to draw seductivley. This book is not appropriate for young people.

4 out of 5 stars It's awesome .......2005-11-06

I would recommend this for all beggining artist in magna, it has helped me alot, now i'm on the search for a magna book that teaches to draw clothing. This will really increase your drawing prowess

5 out of 5 stars Great for younger artists.......2006-12-16

I bought this for my 10 year old. This is a great book. Easily understandable and lots of illustrations of how to. I'm sure he will be able to use this right from the get go.

4 out of 5 stars Really good book!!!.......2006-03-27

Christopher Hart's books are really good. I had borrowed the one for Comic Strips (How to Draw Cartoons for Comic Strips) and I like that one better, but this one is also good. It has a lot of drawings and it's easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars My students love Chris Hart's books!.......2006-02-20

I am an elementary school art teacher and my students love Chris' books. Their favorite is "Cartoon Cool", and this one is a close second. As a teacher, I like this book because it reinforces many of the basic principles I teach about drawing portraits and figures. Chris' simple step-by-step instructions make it easier for kids to understand how to create cartoon characters; many other cartooning books have so many steps that budding artists get frustated and give up. I'll be adding several of Chris' "Kids Draw" books to my art room library this semester, and I'm sure they'll be a big hit. Keep up the good work, Chris!

5 out of 5 stars this book is good for kids.......2006-01-28

i llllllllloooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvv
his books they are great i have stated my own collection this one is a great addtion

4 out of 5 stars Not a beginner's book.......2004-09-05

I bought this book last year, and it's really one of the great ones. However, I don't think it's appropriate for someone who's looking for a "how to draw" book. If you are a beginner, I'd reccomend a good artist's atlas or an art class...
Mr. Hart is not trying to teach you how to draw his characters, but how to perfect your own. I think most of the beginning is just filler; It's weak on form and the instructions are a little confusing. HOWEVER, it's chock full'o goodness in the form of tiny details that a beginner might be unfamiliar with; The fact that a woman's high heeled shoe sticks out at the heel, How the tilt of a nose can change personality, etc.
I have yet to see a better chapter on perspective. Although he does have the obligatory "This a box, these are the box's disapearing lines, etc", he goes much farther, showing how to place a character in relation to the horizon without having to use three rulers and a protractor. Very concise and easy to understand. If you're past stick figures but not quite happy with what you produce, this may be the book for you.
It should be called "Cartooning for the Intermediate" :)

Charles Schulz developed a love of comics and a strong desire to draw cartoons. His only training in art came from a correspondence course he took before WWII. When he was 28, United Feature Syndicate picked up his comic strip with Charlie Brown and decided the strip would be called "Peanuts." Seven newspapers carried that first cartoon and Schulz was paid $90 for it. Over the next 50-plus years, Charlie Brown and Snoopie became comic world icons. When Charles Schulz died on February 12, 2000, millions of fans mourned.

5 out of 5 stars one of the better books on mecha ive seen in some time.......2003-12-13

well i took a chance on this book , i read a review in sketch magazine about this book , and decided to check it out , as i already own two other books that were decent , but not amazing.
i figured for the price.. if i didnt like it , i could just return it. well i have to say this book took me by suprise , it is a very good beginner to intermediate book , especially for the price.it gives alot of good pictures of the various body parts that make up a mech. this book in combination with How to draw manga : giant robots by hikaru hayashi , and mecha mania by christopher hart will have you drawing uber cool mechs in no time. if you are more advanced then this isnt the book for you. if you are just starting out , then i highly recommend this title. chapters are : before you begin drawing , drawing the head , body , arms , legs , and variety of robot design. it even comes with 4 sheets (of pre ruled non repro blue 1 ply) art boards for you to put your designs on . i can also recomend Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots by yasuhiro nitta if you want to draw transforming mecha.

                  Book Description

A magnificent collection of beautiful vessels by the photographer of the highly successful Calendar of Wooden Boats. For almost two decades Benjamin Mendlowitz has traveled the globe to photograph wooden boats. His talent, born from passion for the subject, is unsurpassed. In his calendars and previous books he has already given us a record that ranks with the Rosenfelds and Beken of Cowes as the premier nautical photographic sources. Here Mendlowitz collaborates again with noted marine historian Maynard Bray to present 90 of the world's most interesting and photogenic boats, from simple prams and work boats to glorious classic sailing and power yachts. 200 color photographs.

After World War Three, new powers rise to dominate Earth. In the waters of the Caribbean, four strangers have banded together to face the armies of invading Neo-Nazis. Jed, Richard, and Toots are joined by the mysterious Melissa, a former captive of the facist troops. Fleeing aboard the submersible Sappho 3, the four are pursued by a fleet of Nationalist ships determined to kill or capture them all. Melissa has a daring plan to escape, but if it fails, Jed, Richard, Toots, and Melissa will suffer at the evil hands of the Neo-Nazis.
